Deputy Joshua Greene – School Resource Officer – East Wilkes Middle School

Deputy Joshua Greene knew from an early age that he wanted a career in law enforcement and an opportunity to serve and help others. He has proudly served the citizens of Wilkes County as a Deputy Sheriff since 2003 and has gained valuable experience in several different areas of law enforcement throughout his career.

Deputy Greene began his career with the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center, where his responsibilities went far beyond simply supervising inmates. His duties included regularly checking on the safety, security, and overall condition of inmates; processing and dressing out individuals following their arrest; preparing inmates for court appearances; and helping ensure they received three meals each day. His responsibilities also included assisting with medication distribution, coordinating medical checks and care when needed, and monitoring inmates for changes in their physical or overall condition. This experience taught him the importance of remaining observant, treating people with respect, and maintaining a safe and secure environment for inmates and staff.

Deputy Greene later transferred to the Civil Division, where he gained experience serving a variety of legal documents, including Domestic Violence Protective Orders (DVOs), civil summonses, subpoenas, and other court-related papers. His responsibilities also included numerous courthouse duties. He served as a courtroom bailiff, provided security at the front entrance of the courthouse, called court into session, assisted with bringing inmates before the judge, and worked with judges, court personnel, attorneys, deputies, and others to ensure court proceedings operated safely, professionally, and smoothly.

After his time in the Detention Center and Civil Division, Deputy Greene was given the opportunity to become a School Resource Officer (SRO). He currently serves as the SRO at East Wilkes Middle School, a position he considers one of the most rewarding assignments of his career. His number one priority as an SRO is the safety and security of the students, faculty, and staff.

Deputy Greene strives to be more than a law enforcement presence within the school. He works to be a trusted resource and positive role model for students while building strong relationships with students, families, teachers, and staff. He believes in treating others the way he would want to be treated and values the opportunity to make a positive impact on young people. He understands that students sometimes need guidance and support beyond the classroom and enjoys helping them make choices that can positively influence their lives and futures.
Education and prevention are also important parts of his role. Deputy Greene developed a presentation that he teaches to students each year covering topics such as school safety, bullying, self-respect, respecting others, online safety, and making good life choices. He also serves as a Criminal Justice Club instructor, providing students interested in law enforcement and the criminal justice field with an opportunity to learn more about the profession. In addition, he serves as a manager for the school’s flag team.

From caring for the safety and well-being of inmates, to serving civil process and maintaining courthouse security, to protecting and mentoring students, Deputy Greene's career has allowed him to experience many different aspects of public service. Each assignment has helped shape the deputy and School Resource Officer he is today.

Students, families, faculty, and staff know that Deputy Greene is always available when they need assistance. Throughout his career, he has worked to go above and beyond to help others and takes great pride in serving his community. Making a positive difference in the lives of others continues to be what he finds most rewarding about his career with the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office.
