Last week Wilkes-Barre City Mayor George C. Brown and representatives from the Wilkes-Barre Police and Fire Departments visited Wilkes-Barre Area High School for assemblies with 9th through 12th grade students.

Mayor Brown spoke to the students about his responsibilities as Mayor and the importance of first responders. Police Chief Mike Boyle and Fire Chief Jay Delaney took questions from students about their responsibilities and career highlights before introducing members of their respective departments.

Sergeant Steve Lada and Officer James Verdekal showcased the e-bikes used for the WBPD’s bike patrol unit and spoke about their careers in law enforcement. As in all school visits during this past school year, the high school students were most enthusiastic about Police Officer Rich Olshefski and his K9 partner Tenshi teamwork demonstration.

WBFD Captain Robert Stehle and Firefighter Candice Hartman presented how quickly firefighters get into their turnout gear, as physically demonstrated by Firefighter Michael Meeker, and components of the fire turnout gear and attached equipment. Mayor Brown and representatives from both police and fire departments took questions from the students at the end of the presentation.

Pictured are Mayor Brown and Wilkes-Barre City Police Department and Wilkes-Barre City Fire Department representatives on the WBAHS Auditorium stage.
