Wilkes-Barre City Mayor George C. Brown recently presented a proclamation for Tuskegee Airman Lieutenant Colonel James H. Harvey III to his family members who reside in Wilkes-Barre, Constance Wynn and her partner Joe Milcavage.

Lt. Col. Harvey was born in New Jersey, and his parents James and Cornelia moved to Wilkes-Barre and then to Mountain Top in the 1940s. James was the president and valedictorian of Fairview High School Class of 1942.

Lt. Col. Harvey recently celebrated his 103rd birthday. He currently resides in Colorado. The proclamation was one of his many birthday gifts from family members who resident throughout the United States.

Wilkes-Barre Mayor George C. Brown announced that there will be street cleaning in Wilkes-Barre City for September 8-11. The schedule is tentative and weather permitting.

“No Parking” signs, with the street sweeping day indicated, will be posted during street cleaning in each neighborhood. Vehicles will be ticketed if not moved. Residents are asked to please stay alert to posted signs on streets where they park their vehicle. The tentative schedule is below. Additional neighborhood sweeping schedules will be announced as they are scheduled.

Wilkes-Barre City Hall will be closed on Labor Day, Monday, September 7, 2026. Additionally, there will be no garbage, recycling, or yard waste collections, Monday, September 7th.

Cans, bottles, and plastics recycling and garbage, for residents in Downtown & South Wilkes-Barre 1, will resume on Tuesday, September 8th. Yard waste collection for Downtown & South Wilkes-Barre 1 resumes on Monday, September 14th.

Regular Department of Public Works Hours of 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM will return on Tuesday, September 8th.

Wilkes-Barre City has announced a temporary road closure for South Franklin Street between West Northampton Street and West Market Street on Thursday, September 3rd from 7:00 AM to approximately 1:00 PM.

Meters will be bagged on Wednesday, September 2nd, with ticketing and towing commencing on Thursday, September 3rd at 7 AM.

Wilkes-Barre City Mayor George C. Brown and his administration have been advised of an upcoming Pennsylvania American Water canvassing effort that will take place in the city to identify the material of customers’ water service lines. There are currently over 10,000 customer service lines of unknown material across the city. Homeowners will be sent communications material in advance of canvassing, in multiple ways, including postcards and emails from Pennsylvania American Water.

Beginning next week, on or about September 1st, Pennsylvania American Water’s partner, CDM Smith, will canvass door-to-door in Wilkes-Barre to ask for permission to inspect customer-owned service lines, to identify water service line material. Door hangers will be left behind after inspection and/or door knock.

Canvassers will wear high visibility safety vests and will have American Water badges for identification, which they will provide upon request before entering customers’ property. Program windshield signs will be visible in their vehicles.

Residents can help by working with CDM Smith’s team if they stop by their home. If residents are unsure or prefer to schedule an inspection at a time that works best for them, please call CDM Smith at 717-581-8599. Wilkes-Barre City Mayor George C. Brown and Wilkes-Barre City Fire Department Chief Jay Delaney are pleased to announce the installation of Emergency Warning Lights at Hollenback Fire Station.

Firefighters and Paramedics can enable the emergency warning lights from the fire station or emergency vehicles, when leaving for emergency response. There are also remote beacon controllers in the Fire Engines and Ambulances that can activate the emergency warning lights, when the emergency equipment is returning to Hollenback fire station. The installation of the emergency warning lights is intended to provide safe egress to North Washington Street for the Emergency Response Staff at Hollenback Fire Station and the traveling public.

Chief Delaney stated, “There have been many near misses with Emergency Equipment leaving and returning to Hollenback Fire Station. This project will increase the safety of Firefighter/EMTs, Paramedics, and vehicular drivers near the Hollenback Fire Station and the North Washington Street and George Avenue area.”

“As Mayor, safety is one of my top priorities. The installation of the emergency warning lights at Hollenback Fire Station will hopefully encourage the public to be more aware of the egress of the WBFD emergency vehicles” said Mayor Brown.

There are two warning device areas: on North Washington Street near George Avenue and another south of Axelrad Screen Printing near 1019 North Washinton Street.

Funding for the Hollenback Fire Station Emergency Warning Light Project was provided by the Office of Economic and Community Development, in the amount of $39,050.00. The project contractor was Northeast Signal and Electric Company. Permits were required and attained from PennDOT prior to the installation of the lights.

The Fire Department began using the Emergency Warning Light System on Tuesday, August 25th.
