The Center for Development and Civic Engagement hosted their annual Veteran Carnival on Sunday, August 30th! This special event is held each year for Veterans in our inpatient, residential, and specialized care programs.

Over 30 Veteran Service Organizations and Community Partners joined, playing games with the Veterans, hosting food trucks, and serving treats like cotton candy and snow cones. There was even a car show, live band, and the Stuart Tank from Berwick on site!

It was a truly wonderful day for our Veterans and their families. Thank you to all the supporters, partners, and volunteers for making this event so memorable. We appreciate you!

VA Expands Access to Lifesaving Naloxone (Narcan) — No Prescription Needed.

The Wilkes Barre VA Medical Center is committed to ensuring that every Veteran in our community feels informed, supported, and empowered when it comes to overdose prevention. Central to this work is the Naloxone standing order policy. Starting today, this VA policy ensures that Veterans can receive naloxone directly at the pharmacy without a prescription or copay. Naloxone (Narcan) is a lifesaving medication that can reverse an opioid overdose, and our goal is to make access simple, respectful, and immediate.
The standing order policy places care directly in the hands of Veterans. When a Veteran visits our pharmacy, our clinical pharmacists are able to provide naloxone on the spot and offer clear guidance on how to use it. This approach promotes safety and honors the VA commitment to reducing barriers to essential care.

Wilkes-Barre CLC Veteran touts Physical Therapist Assistant Saved His Life

Marty, a veteran living in our Community Living Center, nominated Physical Therapist Assistant Susan Pozaic for employee of the month. Susan began working with him, whom the veteran describes himself as being a shell of a man. In May of 2023, this kind lady came to his room and began asking him some questions, “Do you go to bingo? - no. Well, you should start socializing.” She was very easy to talk to. She said, “come with me down to therapy,” (Marty had no idea what that was). That was the start of his remarkable comeback to the home race. Gradually and steadily, she helped him recover both mentally and physically from that dark place he had fallen into. Even his family noticed that he was speaking again.
“She gave me another shot at life. I call her my miracle worker. Susan is a very special lady. I know I will feel indebted to her for the rest of my life. When I got here in April 2023, I was pretty much a hermit, I didn't talk to anyone, I didn't leave the room unless I was forced to, I was pretty much shut down- period.” - Marty
Nowadays, if you see him and say hello outside or anywhere else, he’s got you for at least the next half hour. He almost can’t stop talking. Marty lets you converse with him as well. But you get the idea. He has basically made a complete about-face, so to speak, and it’s all because of Susan taking an interest in helping him improve.
Marty does not recall much from that time before Susan started working with him. What he is certain of is that Susan saved his life.
