Have you ever been tempted to move a few rocks to build a mini-dam or change the path of a stream? It might seem like harmless fun, but blocking or changing the flow of water can have a devastating impact on our park’s hidden residents!

Here are a few reasons why it’s important to keep the water flowing:

Baby Salamanders Need to Breathe: Many of our local amphibians breathe through their skin! They need constant, cool, flowing water to stay oxygenated.

Moving Rocks Destroys Homes: The spaces under and between rocks are little safe spaces where tiny wildlife lay eggs and hide from predators. Moving even a few rocks can displace or crush them.

Skews Vital Wildlife Data: Our park team, along with area conservationists and ecologists, conducts wildlife surveys to monitor ecosystem health. When visitors alter a stream, it drives animals away or creates temporary traps. This skews our data, making it difficult for us to accurately protect these species.

The best way to enjoy the spring is to observe nature exactly as it is, untouched, free-flowing and wild. Please leave rocks where they are, let the water flow freely, and help us protect our fragile spring ecosystems.
