The Sumter County Sheriff's Office established this page to convey important public safety information in an efficient manner. Our hope is that using social media platforms such as this will increase our ability to reach the citizens of Sumter County and the surrounding areas in order for us to find criminal suspects, find missing and/or endangered persons, communicate public safety alerts, and further our mission of preventing, solving, and fighting crime in Sumter County. Sumter County was created by the Florida legislature on January 8, 1853, and was once part of Marion County. Known for its simple beauty, much of what is now eastern Sumter County was part of the original Seminole Indian reservation established under the Treaty of Moultrie in 1824, and was named after Revolutionary War hero General Thomas Sumter. Today, Sumter County is one of the fastest growing counties in Florida, encompasses 580 square miles, and is home to over 150,000 people. Sumter County is one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the state of Florida and the United States. The Sumter County Sheriff's Office is founded on the principles of integrity, respect, honesty, and caring for others. With a staff of over 300 dedicated men and women, we are committed to providing professional law enforcement services through a well-trained staff, technology, crime prevention, and a results-oriented, proactive approach to public safety.
