Latimer County…you showed up and showed out today! Because of you, we were able to give the Woodruff family just over $5000 for Katelyn!!!! Thank you for showing up for her and for your patience as we worked thru the kinks of making hundreds of burgers with our 4-H kids! I will make a separate post once I have time to sit down make a list of everyone who donated to our hamburger fundraiser but if you see Leland and Sally Walker or Tony Johnson, tell them thank you. We absolutely couldn’t have done it without them, our fantastic 4-Hers and their parents! Thank you all!

The Mesonet shows a three-day rainfall total of 4.5 to nearly 7 inches in this area. While the heavy rain caused some flash flooding for a short time, the lasting effects aren’t as obvious. Why? It’s all thanks to the Upstream Flood Control Program.

Latimer County has two Watershed areas (Boiling Springs and Fourche Maline) with 15 flood control structures. These structures form lakes that store rainwater and runoff, releasing it gradually. This design helps keep downstream creeks and rivers from flooding and also reduces damage to roads, bridges, buildings and property.

The program started in the early 1960s as a joint effort between the Natural Resources Conservation Services, the Latimer County Conservation District, and local landowners.

The Latimer County Conservation District maintains these structures, including inspecting them after big storms. Staff were out today checking things over and will keep an eye on the runoff as it’s collected.
