🗣️National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week — April 12-18, 2026

At the Wilbraham Regional Emergency Communications Center, we want to shine a light on the dedicated men and women who answer the call when every second counts.
Behind every emergency — every fire, every medical crisis, every police response — there’s a calm voice on the other end of the line.

Our telecommunicators are the first, first responders. They stay composed under pressure, gather critical information, dispatch help, and provide lifesaving instructions — often while managing multiple emergencies at once.

This week, we celebrate their professionalism, compassion, and unwavering commitment to our communities. They may not wear a uniform on the streets, but they are true heroes in our 911 center.

Thank you to our amazing team at the Wilbraham Regional Emergency Communications Center for everything you do — 24/7, 365 days a year.
We couldn’t keep Belchertown, Hampden, Wilbraham and our surrounding communities safe without you. 💛

Last week we welcomed back Director Gentile after 5 weeks off. Director Gentile suffered a critical medical emergency on January 19th which required hospitalization and rehabilitation. During Director Gentile’s absence, Deputy Director Danek ran the department and all Dispatchers stepped up and provided coverage during this time with no lapse in 24/7 staffing. We have a wonderful team at the Wilbraham RECC and Director Gentile is grateful for his staff during his absence.

❄️The Wilbraham Regional Emergency Communications Center is closely monitoring the forecast for a significant winter storm expected to impact our region starting Sunday and continuing through Monday.
Heavy snow, strong winds, and potential power outages are anticipated. Our center will be up-staffed throughout the event to ensure prompt handling of emergency calls and coordination with police, fire, and EMS services.

Important reminders for safety:
• For power outages or downed wires: Please report to National Grid directly at 1-800-465-1212 or online at nationalgridus.com (do NOT call 911 unless there is an immediate life-threatening emergency, such as a fire, medical issue, or downed wire posing imminent danger). Calling 911 for non-emergency power issues ties up lines needed for true emergencies.
• Prepare now: Stock up on non-perishable food, water, medications, batteries, flashlights, and extra blankets. Charge phones and devices.
• If you must travel, avoid unnecessary trips—roads may become hazardous quickly. If driving, keep your gas tank full, carry an emergency kit (blankets, food, water, shovel, etc.), and let someone know your route.
• Stay indoors during the worst of the storm to avoid cold exposure, frostbite, or hypothermia. Dress in layers if going out briefly.
• Shovel snow carefully to prevent heart strain or injury, and clear vents/roof areas if safe to do so to avoid carbon monoxide risks or roof issues.
• Never use generators, grills, or stoves indoors or in attached garages—carbon monoxide is deadly and odorless.
• Check on neighbors, especially the elderly or those with medical needs.
Monitor local weather updates from the National Weather Service, MEMA (Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency), and official town channels. If you have a true emergency, dial 911 immediately.

Stay safe, stay informed, and we’ll keep communications strong during the storm.
