KY286 Residents Demand Traffic Reform

KY286 Residents Demand Traffic Reform We are West Kentucky citizens demanding traffic reform on Kentucky Highway 286 in Ballard and McCracken Counties. We can make KY 286 safer. Let's talk!

We seek productive conversations with public policy makers. We believe that civil and meaningful two-way conversations are the starting point for getting things done. The admin of this page has prior public policy advocacy experience, and developed a program that fostered conversations which eventually led to a legislative act being adopted in Indiana. About 286, we believe that LOCAL TRAFFIC shou

ld mean local traffic. We believe local traffic should be defined as:

1) Anyone living in or working in Ballard and McCracken Counties, as well as those in surrounding counties whose livelihoods and health and well being are essential to the use of KY 286.

2) All EMS and Public Safety vehicles.

3) School and church transportation operated by or for facilities in Ballard and McCracken Counties.

4) Farm operations that need KY 286 for movement of farm trucks and implements.

5) Vehicles making deliveries in areas that require the use of KY 286.

All losses due to traffic accidents are tragic, but losing first responders hits especially hard. Prayers for the Concord Fire Department and the family of firefighter Bristoe.

This morning our department suffered a tragic loss. Responders were dispatched to the 9800 block of Blandville Road for a 2 vehicle crash at around 5:30 A.M. Upon arrival it was found that Concord Firefighter Kameron Bristoe was killed in this collision. Another victim was transported to an out of state hospital for treatment.

First and foremost please keep the family of Firefighter Bristoe in your thought and prayers, Kameron leaves behind a wife and 3 young children. Please also keep the other victim in your thoughts and prayers as well as all the responders on the scene and fire department family he leaves behind.

We also want to show our appreciation to West McCracken Fire Department, Lone Oak Fire Department, Mercy Regional EMS, McCracken County Rescue Squad, McCracken County Coroner’s Office, Emergency Management, and McCracken County Sheriff’s Office for all their support during this time.

BALLARD COUNTY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT
SATURDAY PM UPDATE
April 25, 2026 – 4:00PM

A significant severe weather event is likely on Monday afternoon through the overnight hours.

⏰ Timing:
The greatest concern is 4:00 PM Monday through late night (possibly past midnight).

⚠️ Primary Hazards:

* Damaging winds 70+ mph
* Large hail (golf-ball size or larger)
* Tornadoes, some potentially EF2+

🌩️ Storm Setup:

* Discrete supercells are expected to develop first
* Storms may later evolve into a line of severe storms
* This setup increases the risk for strong tornadoes and widespread wind damage

📍 The attached graphic shows the probability of severe weather across our region.
Areas shaded in pink/red (Level 3) indicate the highest risk, but ALL of Ballard County should be prepared.

🛑 What You Need To Do Now:

* Review your severe weather safety plan
* Identify your safe shelter location
* Have multiple ways to receive warnings (NOAA Weather Radio, phone alerts, local media)
* Be ready to act quickly if warnings are issued

We will continue to provide updates as conditions evolve. Stay weather aware and prepared.

Do’s and Dont’s for Monday’s severe weather potential. DO be weather aware. DON’T be this guy sending road reports from the middle of the funnel. Kind of funny but these people were lucky. 🍀

This graph (p.ES-6) shows the proposed widening sections. The benefits outweigh the costs for those highlighted in yellow per the study.

A note from the founder: I’m excited to be part of the Class of 2026 Kentucky WAVE Leadership Program! Touring the James Marine, Inc. facility in Wickliffe, KY yesterday was eye‑opening and a strong reminder of how vital industry is to Ballard County and our region.
Some of the facilities we’ll visit this year are heavy users of KY 286, and I’ll keep that in mind as I ask questions. We need industry to support the region, and I believe coalition building with these partners, policy makers and others will be key to improving safety along 286.

Another snippet from the KYTC District 1 programming study released January 2026 on KY 286/60.

This image shows concepts for widening priorities. p.ES-5 describes the two types of passing lanes.

I'm not sure what this means for the many homes with road frontage that sit close to the road. KYTC District 1 needs to talk directly with homeowners.

I’m sharing a petition from Paducah, KY Police Blotter, which has long used police scanner info to share timely traffic and safety updates.

With police radio communications now recently encrypted, access to real-time information has been reduced. In a community without a major market TV station covering live traffic updates, this loss is significant. We understand why the encryption decision was made but are hoping for some kind of middle ground.

If you value local safety and traffic awareness, please consider signing and sharing:

We need you! We’re about 50 followers away from having enough people to run meaningful surveys that reflect the broader community attitudes about KY286 safety issues. I have survey ideas that will help KYTC District 1 prepare for public hearings with our community—can you help by sharing our page and asking people to follow?
