Happy Birthday to our former resident, Sam Amidon! The left picture shows him soon after his arrival in Wichita around 1887 as a young new lawyer from Ohio. The right picture shows him around 1924, a year before his death as "the greatest attorney in the Middle West" and personal friend to Woodrow Wilson as vice chair of the Democratic Party. He was likely to be appointed U.S. Attorney General had he lived to see FDR's presidency.

125 years ago today: Sam Amidon's success as Sedgwick County Attorney began stirring rumors about a run for Congress. Amidon would later decline the Democratic nomination for Kansas Attorney General in 1900, citing his desire to return to private practice. He would never hold public office again, although it was widely assumed he would be appointed U.S. Attorney General by the next Democratic administration at the time of his death in 1925.

100 Years Ago Today: Sam Amidon departs Wichita for a meeting to determine the host city of the 1924 Democratic National Convention. Amidon, then vice chair of the national party, would go on to help plan the New York City convention. His preferred candidate, former Treasury Secretary William McAdoo, would lose the nomination to former UK Ambassador John W. Davis, who himself would lose the 1924 presidential election to incumbent President Calvin Coolidge in a landslide. A delegate to every DNC since 1888, the 1924 convention would be Amidon's last, as he would pass away the following May.
