Honk if you love possums!๐ŸŽ‰

Everyday is an adventure at The Kansas Wildlife Exhibit! Sometimes the Wichita music scene and wildlife enthusiasm intersect in the most uplifting way. ๐Ÿค—

You can imagine our surprise and delight upon seeing a grown man in a possum get up holding a sign that read โ€œHonk if you love Possumsโ€! As you well know, we love to celebrate natureโ€™s unsung heroes so meeting The Comfort R***e and crew was like meeting kindred spirits. โœจ

Picture this: a baby possum in need of rehabbing + a clever tee shirt idea + a gig at Kirby's = wildlife advocacy at its finest. ๐Ÿ‘Œ

Check out their page, or better yet, check them out in person to pick up one of their newest tee shirts!

Like, follow, and share if you love possums! ๐Ÿฉถ

A Scout ๐Ÿฆ…pack joined the feeding time presentation today, enjoyed the indoor exhibit ๐Ÿข, and completed a nature adventure requirement.

We have had several packs reach out about native ambassador encounters. We welcome visitors during the noon feeding time, and can usually adjust to accommodate groups around this time.

ฤŒhรกpa ๐Ÿฆซ made an appearance, an alligator snapping turtle was a crowd pleaser and snakes ๐Ÿ were also a hit. The pack had a solid knowledge base, and asked excellent questions while completing their requirements.

Thank you pack 776 from Goddard. โ™ฅ๏ธ

Different groups of birds have different ways of flying together. Starlings? They preform hypnotic murmurations. Geese? Classic V formation. ๐Ÿ‘Œ

But what do turkey vultures do when flying in large groups? They kettle.

Hot air rises and that rising column is called a thermal. Turkey vultures ride these waves of air, gently spiraling as the thermal lifts them upward.

Turkey vultures also congregate in massive communal roosts at night so a sight such as this can occur in late morning before the birds break off to begin their day. โ˜€๏ธTurkey vultures also kettle up as they prepare for fall migration from Kansas to South America where they spend the winter months.

The 4th Annual ICT Bee Fest is happening this Saturday, September 5th from 10 am - 1 pm at Mid-America All-Indian Museum! ๐ŸŒป๐Ÿ

Itโ€™s the best chance of the year to pet bumblebees, chat with native garden experts, watch butterflies, paint rocks, start a native garden, and learn everything about how you can help out local pollinators! ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿชด

Native bees are incredible pollinators, and Kansas is home to over 400 native bee species! Grassland Groupiesโ€™ Bee City Wichita initiative is all about creating an oasis habitat for these Kansas pollinators that live in urban places. ๐Ÿ’

So get your perfect ICT weekend on and visit The Keeper of the Plains and Bee Fest this Saturday! Be there or Bee square! ๐ŸŸจ

โ€œHere fishy ๐Ÿ  fishy ๐ŸŸโ€

This raccoon ๐Ÿฆ is no guardian of the pond, but is likely foraging with its ๐Ÿ™Œ hands for snacks. There are many options in and around water: amphibians, fish, mussels, crayfish etc.

Raccoons have very sensitive hands and also use them to โ€˜inspectโ€™ ๐Ÿ”Žfood items. The scene of a raccoon using a water dish is often mistakingly thought of as washing ๐Ÿงผ food, but they utilize water ๐Ÿ’ง to increase the sensitivity of there hands as they feel potential meals. Raccoons ๐Ÿฆ will dry-rub food items as well.

It was also hot ๐Ÿฅต and a cool dip was welcome.

โ€œMy snack is bananas!โ€ -Pocket, probably.

Few things are as delightful as Pocket smooshing a banana. ๐Ÿฅน If youโ€™ve ever been to Feeding Time you have likely learned that opossums are omnivorous, opportunistic feeders. Pocketโ€™s diets consists of fruits and veggies with plenty of protein options. ๐ŸŸ Although she generally reaches for protein first, nothing rivals the enthusiasm she has for her favorite fruit. ๐ŸŒ

Look ๐Ÿ‘€ at the detail of this Prairie Robber Fly!

Also, find the photobombing spider๐Ÿ•ท๏ธ legs!

A visitor spotted this fly in the native plant bed ๐Ÿชด at KWE, and was armed with macro lens. ๐Ÿ”

Robber flies are also called assassin flies, and feed mostly on other insects. ๐Ÿž๐ŸฆŸ๐Ÿชฒ If you look at the end of the legs, or tarsi, you will notice hooks ๐Ÿชthat aid in holding onto prey. The stout proboscis stabs insects, and secretions not only paralyze the meal, but liquify the contents so they may be sucked up like a smoothie. ๐Ÿฅค

The antenna, bristles, and emerald eyes are really showcased in the photo.

Meet Pez the Porcupine from the Topeka Zoo, and ฤŒhรกpa the Beaver from the Kansas Wildlife Exhibit!

These rodents of unusual size with large, herbivorous appetites have front teeth made for demolishing woody plants and occasionally colorful vegetable treats. ๐Ÿฅ’๐Ÿ
