Bel Aire,

It’s summer time, which means the annual street maintenance program is in full swing!

The city is working towards having all street maintenance along Woodlawn and Rock road completed before school starts back in August.

The 2026 Street Maintenance Project continues tomorrow, June 19, with the paving of Farmstead between 45th and 47th streets, followed by Perryton between Edgemoor and Auburn, weather permitting.

Beginning Monday, June 22, Kansas Paving will move to paving driveway entrances along Woodlawn between 45th and 53rd streets, with flaggers and a pilot car to direct traffic.

On Wednesday, June 24, crews will begin paving Woodlawn’s northbound lane between 45th and 53rd streets, followed by the southbound lane on Thursday, June 25. During paving operations, the full lane where work is occurring will be closed.

During tonight's meeting (June 16), the Bel Aire City Council voted to approve a change order to address the soft subgrade discovered during Phase One of the Woodlawn Reconstruction excavation. The plan involves chemically stabilizing the soft subgrade with a calcium oxide (lime) treatment and geogrid, at a cost not to exceed $712,024.

In an effort to help prevent future delays, this change order includes the costs to treat soft subgrade found in Phase One, as well as the remaining phases of the reconstruction project, if encountered.

The change order will now move forward to KDOT for final approval. Once approved, work will resume as soon as materials and crews are available.

The City will continue to provide updates, including a confirmed restart date, as more information becomes available.

You may have seen the cones lined up along Woodlawn between 45th and 53rd streets. These are for the 2026 Street Maintenance Project, during which this section of Woodlawn will undergo a mill and overlay and then be restriped to include a center turn lane.

Crews from Kansas Paving are ahead of schedule and began the first steps of the process by milling the edges of the roadway earlier today, with plans to complete this work tomorrow, weather permitting. Then, crews will move to Rock Road to begin the same edge milling between 45th and 53rd streets. During this work, flaggers will be on site to direct traffic.

If you are traveling through the area while crews are present, please give them extra room and proceed slowly.

Don't forget to attend the Kansas Department of Transportation's second open house for the K-254: Rock, Webb & Greenwich Interchange Study tomorrow, June 4, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Northeast Magnet High School (5550 N Lycee St, Bel Aire, KS 67226).

This open house will present the proposed interchange concept, as well as recommended short-term and long-term improvements along the corridor, based on feedback from the February event. Your input is valuable and will help the study team refine the improvement recommendations within the study area.

Another opportunity to learn more and provide feedback to KDOT WichitaKDOT on the study for improvements to the Rock, Webb and Greenwich intersections along K254 Highway.

The Kansas Department of Transportation is holding another Open House for the K-254: Rock, Webb & Greenwich Interchange Study on Thursday, June 4 from 5 - 7 p.m. at Wichita Northeast Magnet High School.

Last week I attended the K-254 Corridor Development Association meeting.

The agenda covered several items; KDOT 2025 local consult meeting in review, update on Rock/Webb/Greenwich interchange study, presentation on KDOT improvements on River Valley Road and K254, Northwest Expressway update and a discussion on approach to continued work to support short-term projects along the K254 highway corridor.

Special thanks to our friends at City of Park City, Kansas for hosting in their new Senior Center. The building is beautiful and a great investment for seniors in the area. If you are a senior in Sedgwick County you should check it out.
