For Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, Malaya Kansas is hosting a film screening of “The Rise of the I-Hotel,” a short documentary about the history of the International Hotel in San Francisco and the Filipino/Asian-American community that fought to save it.

Synopsis:
As the EDSA Revolution unfolds, a mother, son, and daughter who live in a slum near Malacañang Palace grapple with the murder of their patriarch in the hands of corrupt policemen, turning from passive victims of social injustice into active participants in the final hours of the uprising. Oras de Peligro features actual video footage, audio, photos, and newspaper clippings of the real events that led to the February 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution.

The film is in Filipino, with English subtitles.
Runtime: 1 hour 44 minutes

2023 Asian Night Market on Saturday, May 27th!

Malaya Kansas will be selling Filipino snacks to fundraise for our organization and handing out free literature and informational materials all evening!

When: Saturday, May 27, 2023 from 5-10pm
Where: Wichita Riverfront Stadium, 275 S McLean Blvd, Wichita, KS
General Admission (6pm entry) on the day of the event is $10. Early admission (5pm entry) is $20.

Please join Malaya Kansas this Saturday from 4:00-5:30 PM for a film screening and email writing campaign. Over Zoom, we will view a short documentary together and write to Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly and ask her to establish a Kansas-Philippines sister state/province.
