The challenge is simple: look closely at today’s photo and see if you can spot what could be unsafe.

Answer: The charging cable is damaged and has exposed wires.

Damaged or frayed charging cords should be replaced immediately. Using damaged charging equipment can cause overheating, damage the battery and increase the risk of fire.

It’s also important to use the charger and cable recommended by the device manufacturer, or a compatible and properly certified replacement.

Just because a charger fits your device doesn't necessarily mean it's the right or safest charger to use.

So, if you spot a damaged charging cable, don't wait for it to become a bigger problem. Replace it.

This Saturday is our LAST HOME FOOTBALL GAME of the season! Join us as we recognize and celebrate our seniors before the game for their hard work, dedication, and contributions to Longhorn athletics.

Make a day of it and show your Longhorn pride! Then come back that evening to cheer on our volleyball team!

Day 1: Look Closely
Today’s challenge features a photo involving something most teenage students use every day: a backpack, books, and cell phones with their lithium-ion batteries.

Take a close look at the and see how many potential safety issues you can find.
The backpack was dropped with a phone inside.

Drops and impacts can damage lithium-ion batteries, even when the damage isn't immediately visible. A damaged battery can overheat, swell or catch fire.

If a device is dropped or damaged, check it before using or charging it. Watch for signs such as swelling, unusual heat, strange smells, leaking or hissing.

If something doesn't seem right, stop using or charging it and have it properly inspected or recycled.

Thank you to all the parents and students who were able to attend our “Preparing for What’s Next” presentation! We appreciate you taking the time to learn about college and career opportunities, scholarships, FAFSA, college visits, and what to expect during their junior and senior years.
