The Whittier Police Department is proud to introduce the Blue Envelope Program, an initiative to enhance communication and understanding between law enforcement officers and individuals with disabilities during traffic stops.

The Blue Envelope can be used to store important documents such as copies of your driver’s license, vehicle registration, proof of insurance, and emergency contact information. Keeping these items in the envelope and storing it in your vehicle’s glove compartment can help facilitate communication and create a safer, more comfortable interaction during a traffic stop.

Blue Envelopes are available for pickup at the following locations:

SB TRAFFIC LANES REMAIN BLOCKED:

As of 5am, the southbound lanes of Colima Road between Casino Drive and Mar Vista Street remain closed by the Los Angeles County Fire Department. All northbound lanes have been reopened.

Please expect traffic delays, and use alternate routes as the area may be impacted. The Whittier Police Department will update this post once all lanes have reopened.

EAST WHITTIER BRUSH FIRE ALERT

The City of Whittier is aware of a brush fire currently burning on Colima Road near the Murphy Ranch baseball fields.

Los Angeles County Fire Department is on scene actively responding. Colima Road is currently closed in both directions in the area. Please avoid the area and use alternate routes.

Residents on Casino Drive (Unincorporated Whittier, Los Angeles County) are being contacted by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department regarding evacuations as a precaution. Please follow all instructions from emergency personnel.

There are currently no City of Whittier evacuations.

The City will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.

On June 17, 2026, at approximately 10:14pm, while proactively patrolling near Los Nietos Park in Santa Fe Springs, a Whittier PD Officer observed a vehicle violation and conducted a traffic stop. During the investigation, he recognized the driver as a documented gang member and learned he was on active parole. A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a loaded, P80 ghost gun hidden beneath the driver’s seat, additional rounds of ammunition, and a gun holster was located in the suspect’s waistband.

The suspect was further found in possession of approximately 3.1 grams of suspected methamphetamine, 12.7 grams of packaged baggies, and $602 in cash.

Following up on the arrest, the Special Enforcement Team (SET) served a probation search at the suspect’s residence today at approximately 12:30 p.m. During the search, WPD Detectives recovered another loaded P80 ghost gun, a short-barreled rifle, ammunition, and a small amount of suspected methamphetamine.

Outstanding proactive work by our officers and detectives in removing illegal fi****ms and narcotics from our community.

With an increase of traffic collisions involving juveniles on e-bikes, Whittier PD wants to emphasize the importance of knowing what you are purchasing for yourself and your children.

Not all electric bicycles are the same! 🚲

Understanding the differences between Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 e-bikes can help keep riders safe and ensure they’re following the law. A common misconception is that electric motorcycles (dirt bikes) are e-bikes, but they are not.

These electric motorcycles do not meet the requirements for an electric bicycle. They do not have pedals and travel at speeds that exceed all e-bike classifications. As a result, they are subject to different laws and regulations.

If you know of an address where fireworks are being set off, sold, or stored, you can anonymously report the information to the Whittier PD Tipline at (562) 567-9299, or call WPD Dispatch directly at (562) 567-9240.

🧨 Any person observed by a Police or Code Enforcement Officer lighting fireworks within the City limit may be fined $5,000.

🧨Homeowners, landlords, and tenants may also be fined $5,000 if they allow fireworks to be lit from private property under their control.

Yesterday, the Whittier Police Department Traffic Bureau conducted an OTS-funded traffic enforcement operation with four officers. The operation resulted in 62 traffic stops and 58 citations issued.

Notable enforcement included the impoundment of an e-motorcycle and several speeding citations, one of which involved a vehicle traveling 75 mph on Colima Road at Murphy Ranch.
