Today I announce my concession for the election to the Whittier Union High School Board of Trustees - TA 4. It has been one month since the primary election and today is the deadline for the Los Angeles Registrar's office to certify the election results.
On November 9th I was leading the election thanks to the many people who voted, in person, for me. Over the following weeks, my lead slipped away as (presumably) mail-in ballots, mailed on election day, started to be tabulated. Though it was a close election - 12,874 voters voted in our race, I came up short by 504 votes. I thank the 6,185 voters who had confidence in my ability to represent the families and students as a WUHSD board trustee.
My best wishes go to the newly installed superintendent Dr. Monica Oviedo and her team as they will work with a new school board. After 25 years of consistent leadership, today two new trustees will take their place in the future of the district. If you have high school-age or younger children, I encourage you to keep a watchful eye on this new board of trustees. Be sure the board focuses on academics, arts, and athletics. Make sure our students are being kept safe from drugs and violence. Advocate for great teachers and parent involvement.
The Whittier Union High School District is an amazing school district with outstanding teachers, beautiful facilities, CIF champion sports teams, and powerful arts programs. Let’s be sure student academics trend upward. The student’s academic proficiency should be above 70% and currently, the district (like most of California schools) is nowhere near that level. We can do better and it is a disservice to our students to let them move on to their post-high school years, being deficient in math or language. When teachers, staff, parents and the community work together, we can achieve student academic greatness.
I want to thank my family who stood by me through this process. My wife Judy was there the day we decided to run and my sons cheered me on every step of the journey. Thank you to those who donated to my campaign. You made an investment and I intend on doing what I can to fulfill that investment. Thank you to those who endorsed my campaign. Hundreds of Whittierites stepped up to publicly say, “Yes, we support Chris Hardeman!" And thank you to all my new acquaintances who I met along the campaign journey. All of the support is very humbling and I will cherish it for my days to come.
I will continue to root for the Whittier Union High School District on this page. I will support my sons, who will soon enter the district, and I will advocate on behalf of any student who wants to achieve great things during their high school years.
Thank you
Chris Hardeman
