Heads up, Whittier! QAP will be conducting controlled blasting as part of the Shotgun Cove Road Extension Project.

📅 Date: Thursday, May 28
⏰ Approx. Time: 8:00am - 5:00pm

⚠️ Safety Reminder:
The road is closed at Mile 1.5 during construction.

Please stay clear of the work zone — for your safety and the safety of the crew.

Expect loud noises and possible delays in the immediate area.

Blasting is an important step toward completing this project and keeping us on track for a Fall 2026 grand opening.

The 2026 Property Tax Assessment Roll for the City of Whittier has been completed. Notices of assessed value will be mailed to the record owners of all real property on Tuesday, April 14, 2026. If you own more than one parcel, your assessments may be mailed separately.

Review your property assessment carefully to ensure the values are accurate and that any applicable exemptions have been applied. If you believe there are errors or omissions, you may notify the assessor promptly in writing using the Property Tax Assessment Appeal Form, available at City Hall or by contacting the City Hall at 907-472-2327.

🥳 We’re excited to launch something new for Whittier.

The Whittier City Council is rolling out a Community Beautification Matching Grant Program for 2026—and we’re looking forward to investing in our community alongside you.

If you own or operate a commercial, small boat harbor, or industrial property, this is an opportunity to improve your space and help elevate the look of Whittier as a whole.

Eligible projects include things like:

Removing derelict boats, equipment, or debris
Exterior building improvements
Site clean-up and visible upgrades
Permanent landscaping or signage improvements

Grants reimburse up to 50% of project costs (up to $5,000 per project). Funding is limited, and projects must be approved before work begins.

Key Dates:

Applications open: April 24
Deadline to apply: May 22
Awards considered by Council: June 16

🚢 Big news for Whittier!

The City of Whittier has been awarded $4.1 million through the federal Port Infrastructure Development Program to move forward with designing a replacement for the Delong Dock—our closest year-round deepwater port to Anchorage.

This project is a major step toward strengthening the reliability, safety, and long-term resilience of our port. The Delong Dock plays a critical role in how goods, fuel, and materials move through our community and beyond. Investing in its future means investing in Whittier’s role as a key gateway to Prince William Sound and Southcentral Alaska.

This award is part of a larger $115.4 million investment in Alaska’s ports, reinforcing just how important communities like ours are to the state’s transportation network.

What happens next? We’ll begin the design phase for a modern replacement dock—laying the groundwork for future construction and long-term improvements.
