Nature Storytime was extra special this past Saturday, as we hosted Whiteville author Tonnye Fletcher to share her debut book at the museum!

Thanks to everyone who came out, including the Whiteville Garden Club for providing plants that transported the audience from our classroom into the book’s setting! We hope everyone enjoyed this event as much as we did.

Our museum colleagues, including one of Whiteville’s own, are on an epic adventure across the United States, and you can experience the trip from right here in the museum!

“Return of the Wild” retraces the Lewis and Clark expedition to observe how animal populations have changed in our country’s 250-year history. At checkpoints along the way, we’re hosting livestreams with real-time updates from the field team. You’ll get the chance to ask questions on their travels and learn about what they’ve observed so far.

Check out the event page in our profile for more info.

Did you know some species of salamanders migrate?

In late winter and early spring, spotted salamanders across eastern North America wait for ideal conditions to leave their burrows, converging en masse on temporary ponds to reproduce. This typically occurs under the cover of darkness. However, you can experience it for yourself via one of our new Investigate Lab stations, The Great Migration!

It puts you in the shoes of a spotted salamander with one goal— make it from your burrow to a temporary pool. Along the way, you’ll face obstacles the amphibian might encounter, such as road crossings and predators. See if you can make it to the end during your next visit!
