Today, we pause from the noise of our everyday lives to remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today.

Memorial Day is more than a long weekend. It’s a time to reflect on the courage, selflessness, and dedication of those who gave everything in service to our country.

From all of us at the Whitestown Fire Department, we remember the fallen, honor their sacrifice, and keep their families in our thoughts today and always. 🇺🇸

🚑 Throwback Thursday | EMS Edition 🚑

As we celebrate EMS Week, we wanted to take a moment to look back at the roots of emergency medical service in Whitestown.

In 1985, under the leadership of Chief John Hancock, four members of the Worth Township Fire Department completed the department’s very first EMT course. At the time, bringing EMS service to a small town volunteer fire department was no small task. Through the dedication and persistence of members like Greg Bedell, Rob Guest, Glenn Fisher, Chief Hancock, and many others, the foundation for EMS in Whitestown was built.

On July 30th, 1985, the department responded to its very first EMS call.

What started as a vision to provide better care for the community has grown into the EMS system Whitestown Fire Department provides today. From those first EMT classes and donated medical supplies to now staffing every apparatus with at least one paramedic and operating two transport ambulances, EMS has become a cornerstone of the service we provide every single day.

Today, WFD responds to over 2,000 calls annually, majority of which are EMS, with highly trained EMTs and Paramedics continuing the mission started over 40 years ago.

We are proud of the members who laid the groundwork before us and grateful for all EMS providers—past and present—who continue serving the Whitestown community with compassion, professionalism, and dedication.

🚑 What’s the Difference Wednesday 🚑
It’s EMS Week, and today we’re breaking down one of the questions we hear all the time:

What’s the difference between an EMT and a Paramedic? 👀

Both EMTs and Paramedics are highly trained medical professionals who respond when you call 911, and both play a critical role in patient care. The biggest difference comes down to the level of training and the types of advanced care they can provide.

🩺 EMTs are trained to provide:
• Basic life support
• CPR and AED use
• Oxygen administration
• Bleeding control and splinting
• Patient assessments and emergency stabilization

💉 Paramedics receive advanced medical training that allows them to provide:
• Cardiac monitoring and interpretation
• IV medications and advanced airway management
• Advanced life support interventions
• Advanced cardiac care and lifesaving procedures

At Whitestown Fire Department, every member is trained as either an EMT or Paramedic, with each apparatus staffed with at least one paramedic ready to provide advanced care when seconds matter most. Along with our two transport ambulances, our crews train year-round to bring high-quality emergency medical care to our community.

Whether it’s an EMT starting care the moment they arrive or a paramedic delivering advanced interventions, it takes the entire team working together to make a difference every single day. 💙

💫 Did you know? Every operational member of the Whitestown Fire Department is certified as either an EMT or Paramedic, allowing our crews to provide advanced medical care from the moment we arrive on scene.

Currently, WFD is staffed by 41 EMTs, and 18 Paramedics including administrative staff. Every apparatus is staffed with at least one paramedic on board to help ensure our community receives the highest level of emergency medical care possible, 24 hours a day. In addition to our fire apparatus staffing, Whitestown Fire also operates two transport ambulances, allowing our crews to provide continuous patient care from the initial response all the way to the hospital.

Behind every response are countless hours of EMS education, hands-on training, continuing education, and recertification completed each year by our personnel. From cardiac emergencies and traumatic injuries to everyday medical calls, our crews continuously train to stay prepared for whatever comes next. 🚑 🚒

Happy Medic Monday from Whitestown Fire Department! 🚑

Before the calls start rolling in, Medic 272’s crew is already hard at work making sure every piece of equipment is checked, stocked, and ready to go. Paramedic Ronnie Graham and EMT Evan Faulkner, who is also currently attending paramedic school, spend each shift preparing for whatever the day may bring.

From medical emergencies to critical incidents, readiness matters. Their commitment to training, preparation, and patient care helps ensure our community receives the highest level of service when seconds count.

Thank you to Ronnie, Evan, and all of our EMS providers who answer the call day and night.

EMS Week was first established in 1974 by President Gerald Ford to honor Emergency Medical Services professionals and the vital role they play in protecting the health and safety of our communities. Since then, EMS Week has become a nationwide recognition of the men and women who provide lifesaving care every single day.

Whether responding to a cardiac arrest, motor vehicle accident, traumatic injury, or medical emergency, EMS professionals stand ready 24/7 to serve those in need.

Thank you to all EMS professionals for your dedication, sacrifice, and commitment to caring for others. Your impact on this community does not go unnoticed.

This EMS Week, we proudly recognize the dedicated paramedics and EMTs of the Whitestown Fire Department who answer the call every day with compassion, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to our community.

From medical emergencies and critical calls to moments when someone simply needs reassurance, our EMS crews are there — ready to serve at a moment’s notice. Their work goes far beyond transportation and treatment. They make a difference in people’s lives during some of the most difficult moments imaginable, all while continuing to improve outcomes, together.

This week, Firefighters Miles, Miller, Proffitt, Sodrel, and Weilein attended the Fire Department Training Network(FDTN) Truck 1 course to continue sharpening their skills and bringing valuable training back to Whitestown Fire Department.

Throughout the week, each discipline focused on its designated area of expertise including truck operations, engine company work, and command functions. The training culminated in a final live fire scenario where all groups came together to operate as a coordinated fireground team in realistic conditions.

Opportunities like this allow our firefighters to train alongside departments from across the country while reinforcing the teamwork, communication, and coordination required on today’s fireground.

We’re proud of these firefighters for continuing to invest in their training and commitment to serving the Whitestown community.
