The Whitesburg Police Department will be conducting traffic safety checkpoints periodically, starting today May 18th, 2026 thru May 31st, 2026. These checkpoints will mainly be in the evening hours and at approved locations throughout the city and county. These checkpoints will be conducted in an effort to enforce the traffic and regulatory laws of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Traffic safety checkpoints are a way for the Whitesburg Police Department to improve highway safety throughout the community and also interact with its citizens. The main goal is to increase the safety of the citizens within the Commonwealth and the city of Whitesburg.

Approved locations are:
-US 119 N near Howard’s carpets
-Hazard Rd (KY15 X) near the old whitesburg football field
-KY 15 N near the Earnest Cook Memorial Ball fields
-KY Hwy 2034 near the Cabinet for Health and Family Services
-Other locations may be added and will be updated to this post

Whitesburg Police Department’s K9 Sully has received donation of body armor

Whitesburg Police Department, KY - K9 Sully has received a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. K9 Sully’s vest was sponsored by Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. and embroidered with the sentiment “In memory of Officer Pradeep Tamang”.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., established in 2009, is a 501(c)(3) charity whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. This potentially lifesaving body armor for four-legged K9 officers is U.S. made, custom fitted, and National Institute of Justice (NIJ) certified. Since its inception, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. has provided over 6,513 vests valued at $6.9 million to K9s in all 50 states, made possible by both private and corporate donations.

The program is open to U.S. dogs at least 20 months old and actively employed and certified with law enforcement or related agencies. K9s with expired vests are also eligible to participate. There are an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s throughout the United States.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., accepts tax-deductible contributions in any amount, while a single donation of $1,050 will sponsor one vest. Asst. Chief Hunsucker and K9 Sully, while being assisted by Chief Fields and Officer Whitaker, were able to remove this suspected m**hamphetamine and a firearm out of the hands of a convicted felon on a traffic stop today. Along with other paraphernalia and illegal substances.

Two individuals were charged, one suspect had 5 warrants including a parole warrant.

All individuals are innocent until proven guilty.

WPD is currently investigating a series of events over the past week involving vandalism and graffiti at the James Wiley Craft Memorial Park. These events have been captured on surveillance footage, and those responsible for the destruction of our local recreation will be prosecuted.
