I don’t really have any updates for us! COVID-19 halted the work that the university was planning for the Ayers Pre-Civil War farmstead and cemetery clean up. Hoping we can do this soon. The graves continue to deteriorate.

This is the week! We will meet with faculty from UWG's Anthropology department and the Center for Public History at the Ayres (or Ayers) Pre-Civil War cemetery and farmstead on Saturday. Hope to begin conversations about cemetery clean up, ground penetrating radar, and locating the original two-story log cabin that would have been built in the 1820s-30s. So excited! If you are family- or just love history like me- message me. So much cool stuff to find here! A true exploration of life after the Land Lottery of 1827 awaits. This family likely rode in a covered wagon to the site and forged out a home in the wilderness.

Happy Tuesday! We will be gathering at the site for the first initial meeting on Saturday, October 26. More info to come! I will let our friends from Anthropology and the UWG Center for Public History help us to determine next steps. Once we have more of a plan, I will reach out through family channels to get folks involved. I have reached out to a local historian, Doug Mabry, who is intimately familiar with the Banning Mills and Whitesburg area. He may be joining us, as well. He recognized the Ayers name well. :) If you know of Ayres/Ayers family in the area, let me know.
