It's time for What We're Reading Wednesday!

Our director, Virginia, recently read the audiobook version of 'The Safekeep' by Yael van der Wouden. Set in the Netherlands in 1961, it follows Isabel, a reclusive woman who obsessively tends her family home until her brother's girlfriend shows up for the summer and turns everything upside down. Winner of the 2025 Women's Prize for Fiction and a Booker Prize finalist, this is a taut, atmospheric, and deeply surprising read.

At 11:00am join us for Not Everyone is a Friend presented by Safe Seniors and learn how to protect yourself and the seniors in your life from neglect, fraud, and scams.

Then from 6 - 8pm, bring the whole family and become citizen scientists during the Earth Day Animal Spot-A-Thon by helping Snapshot Wisconsin monitor wildlife from anywhere in the world! Please bring your own laptop, tablet, or smartphone if you’d like to participate during the event, and learn how to continue your citizen science contributions from home.🦊🦉

It's National LIbrary Workers Day! Give a shout out to our wonderful staff in the comments!😃

It's National Library Workers Day - our favorite day of National Library Week!

Today we celebrate the hardworking, dedicated library professionals who power possibility in our neighborhoods, our schools, and our places of higher learning. As library workers across the U.S. continue to face challenges to their jobs and harassment from bad actors, it's essential we show up for them and voice our support for the work they do every day.

Thank you, library workers - libraries work because YOU do!

Join us at the library Wednesday, April 22 at 11:00am for "Not Everyone is a Friend" — a free presentation from Safe Seniors (AgeWell Services of West Michigan) on protecting yourself and your loved ones from abuse and fraud.

Topics include recognizing signs of neglect, physical, emotional, and financial abuse, common scams targeting older adults (romance scams, grandchild emergency scams, sweepstakes, and tech support scams), online safety tips, and how to report suspected abuse or fraud.

Scams are more sophisticated than ever — staying informed is your best defense!

It's National Library Week!

The Friends of the Library group has set up an interactive display to help celebrate. Stop by anytime this week to share a note of appreciation for your library or a favorite staffer, or even nominate a Star Librarian.

We are also offering free replacement cards throughout the month of April, so now is the time to replace a lost or worn-out tan card with one of our new, more colorful library cards. Stop in anytime during open hours to get yours.

It's National Library Week!

Millions of people visit their libraries every week—and for good reason. During National Library Week, April 19–25, take time to discover what brings you joy at your library. Visit your library and bring friends and family along; encourage a friend to get a library card and discover the opportunities it unlocks; browse the shelves, join a book club, attend a program or storytime, or get started on your next creative project in a makerspace.

National Library Week is filled with opportunities to celebrate our libraries and take action to keep them strong. Join in on one (or all!) of the various commemoration days:

Monday, 4/20: Right to Read Day - we're calling on library lovers and advocates to celebrate wins against censorship efforts and to take action to defend the freedom to read. On Right to Read Day, ALA will release the State of America's Libraries Report, including the list of the Top 10 Most Challenged Books of 2025.

Tuesday, 4/21: National Library Workers Day - take time to honor and thank the library workers at your library for all they do to impact your community.

Wednesday, 4/22: National Library Outreach Day - a day to celebrate libraries meeting people where they are. Look for your library out in your community - in the bookmobile, at a local pop-up, at schools or assisted living facilities, or wherever!

Thursday, 4/23: Take Action For Libraries Day - this year, we're asking YOU to show up for our libraries and take action against legislative censorship attempts by contacting Congress.

Stay tuned for posts throughout the week and more ways to get involved, and be sure to visit your library and ilovelibraries.org and celebrate your library.

It's time for another edition of What We're Reading Wednesday!

Today we're excited to feature Scott who recently read 'The Transcendent Brain' by Alan Lightman.

In this beautifully written exploration, physicist and novelist Alan Lightman tackles one of humanity's oldest questions: Can a mind made entirely of atoms experience wonder, awe, and transcendence? Drawing on neuroscience, philosophy, and his own personal moments of awe, he makes a compelling case for spiritual naturalism: the idea that the material world, understood through science, is itself a source of profound meaning and beauty.
