Westchester County has been awarded $3 million in competitive funding through the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) Clean Mobility Program to launch a zero-emission micro transit pilot serving Peekskill and surrounding communities. The program supports projects that improve connections to public transportation and expand access to affordable, sustainable transportation options.

The pilot service, starting later this year, will operate for three years using 100 percent zero-emission vehicles and is expected to serve a zone extending beyond the City of Peekskill into portions of Cortlandt, Buchanan, Verplanck, and Montrose, including the VA Hospital. The program is designed to help residents connect to transit, jobs, healthcare and other essential services while addressing long-standing transportation gaps in underserved communities.

Westchester County has released its comprehensive Waste Reduction Study, and the findings confirm that the County is leading when it comes to waste reduction. The study has also outlined a forward-looking strategy to further increase recycling, reduce waste and advance a circular economy in alignment with New York State’s goal of achieving an 85% recycling rate by 2050.
The Waste Reduction Study was commissioned to identify strategies that could significantly reduce the volume of waste requiring disposal within the County, including the Refuse Disposal District No. 1 (which encompasses approximately 90% of the County’s population). Barton and Loguidice was selected to conduct the study. The study was based on data collected from a variety of sources including public surveys and listening sessions, discussions with Department of Environmental Facilities (DEF) staff members, and a review of relevant case studies from other areas.
County Executive Ken Jenkins said: “Westchester County has long been a leader in environmental stewardship. This Waste Reduction Study lays out a clear path forward, one that builds on our success, strengthens our partnerships with municipalities and businesses, and ensures we continue protecting our environment for future generations.”

"For the people!" Westchester County Government participates in massive Demand Response Programs, drawing down loads of electricity to minimize brown/black-outs and the need to fire up dirty "peaker" generation plants. Our waste water recovery facilities use up a great portion of this juice, so before our time to draw down, they flush through massive quantities of effluent. We take some of our elevators out of service, if there are multiple ones like in my office building; we have 6 so we take a couple out of service. No large print jobs, turn-off extraneous devices, turn down the a/c, turn off lights if you can (although LEDs draw very little), and other protocols particular to the facility. County employees doing our part for the good of all.
