Happy Birthday, Lewis Latimer!

Today, we're celebrating one of the most brilliant minds in electrical history: Lewis Latimer, born September 4, 1848. This legendary inventor and engineer didn't just light up New York; he helped light up the world.

Lewis was a key figure in the electrical revolution that shaped New York State. His innovations in carbon filament technology and electrical distribution systems helped make reliable, affordable electricity possible for all New Yorkers, and he did it with brilliance, creativity, and determination.

From his work with Edison to his contributions to electrical engineering, Lewis proved that innovation knows no limits. He broke barriers, shattered ceilings, and left a legacy that powers our state to this day.

At NYPA, we stand on the shoulders of giants like Lewis Latimer. His pioneering work in electricity reminds us why we're committed to delivering reliable, clean power to every corner of New York State.

Here's to the visionary who helped electrify a nation.

Smart Path Connect Is Now Energized: Transforming How New York Powers Itself

Our 100-mile transmission modernization project is officially live, and it represents one of the most significant infrastructure upgrades the state has seen in decades.

Smart Path Connect replaces 70-year-old infrastructure with modern steel transmission towers, enabling up to 1 gigawatt of renewable energy to flow across New York State. That's more clean energy reaching communities and industries that depend on it, all moving through a system built for today's energy demands.

This is the result of years of planning, a strong collaboration with National Grid, and coordinated ex*****on across two critical corridors. It's infrastructure that powers New York's clean energy future, and the kind of foundational work that makes the grid more resilient and capable.

See how this came together - watch the full story and learn more on our blog, Watts + Locks:

A 100-mile transmission line isn’t most people’s idea of a summer celebration.
