ach water quality and preventing the spread of infectious diseases. After hours, we will return those calls that we consider to be public health emergencies. Other calls will be responded to the next business day. For non-emergency calls, you can also send us your comments and suggestions by e-mail. After hours, the Health Department responds to public health emergencies such as sewage spills, chemical or oil spills, encounters with potentially rabid animals, lack of heat, foodborne disease outbreaks and infectious disease concerns. Each evening a Health Department staff member and a physician respond to emergencies called in to the main Health Department number. A taped message gives examples of public health emergencies and pertinent phone numbers after hours.
