JOBS Waiting

JOBS Waiting Jobs Waiting seeks to retrain 500 of the Hudson Valley’s long-term unemployed to obtain careers in one of the region’s hottest sectors: healthcare.

The Jobs Waiting Program is a federally-funded regional job training program designed to connect unemployed individuals with careers in fast-growing industries including advanced manufacturing, biotech, healthcare, and information technology. The Jobs Waiting Program is a federally-funded Ready to Work grant, led by Westchester County, and managed by the Westchester County Association in partnersh

ip with the Westchester-Putnam Workforce Development Board, and seven participating counties in the Hudson Valley. Jobs Waiting can save employers time and money in their recruitment efforts because it offers access to a highly motivated and skilled pool of job candidates who are ready for work. Graduates of the program serve as a robust pipeline of committed candidates who are ready and willing to fill critical positions. Employers also receive online access to resumes, and up to 50 percent reimbursement for on-the-job and customized training costs. Job seekers have the chance to attend boot camps to gain in-demand skills from regional employers. The six-week experience includes career readiness training, social media skills, and guidance from job coaches. Instructors teach the “soft skills” needed in the workplace, as well as the hard skills including technology. Graduates leave the program highly motivated to start new career pathways in healthcare. This regional training program is offered to individuals who have been unemployed for over 26 weeks in seven counties throughout the Hudson Valley: Westchester, Putnam, Rockland, Orange, Dutchess, Ulster, and Sullivan.

After Kalil lost his brother to gang violence in Brooklyn, he spent more than a year grieving, not working, not doing anything. Then his mother moved him and his siblings to Yonkers, where he found a new purpose with the help of the Jobs Waiting program. Read his story here.

In December 2017, Kalil Applewhite’s brother went out from his home in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, to cash a check so he could go Christmas shopping. He never returned. When Kalil found out his brother was shot and killed, he was devastated.
