๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’›โค๏ธ Happy Juneteenth! ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’›โค๏ธ

Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day or Freedom Day, is the date that celebrates the end of slavery in America and the beginning of a life of freedom for African-Americans living in America.

On January 1st, 1863, Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation into law announcing: โ€œThat all persons held as slaves are, and henceforward shall be free.โ€ However, it wasnโ€™t until two years later that all enslaved people in Galveston, Texas were actually freed on June 19th, 1865.

โ€œJuneteenth has never been a celebration of victory or an acceptance of the way things are. Itโ€™s a celebration of progress. Itโ€™s an affirmation that despite the most painful parts of our history, change is possibleโ€”and there is still so much work to do.โ€ โ€“ Barack Obama

Reminder: City offices and the Public Library will be CLOSED Monday, June 22nd in observance of Juneteenth. Offices will reopen on Tuesday, June 23rd at 7:15am.

๐Ÿป Bear Sightings Reported in the Area ๐Ÿป

The Police Department would like to make residents aware of recent bear sightings within our community. The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) has been notified and is actively monitoring the area and conducting patrols.

While bear encounters are uncommon, residents are encouraged to remain alert and take precautions to help keep both people and wildlife safe.

Bear Safety Tips:
โœ… Do not approach, feed, or attempt to interact with a bear.
โœ… Keep garbage secured in bear-resistant containers or indoors until pickup day.
โœ… Remove outdoor food sources, including pet food, bird feeders, and livestock feed.
โœ… Keep a safe distance if you observe a bear and allow it plenty of space to move away.
โœ… Supervise pets when outdoors and keep them on a leash when possible.
โœ… If you encounter a bear, remain calm, back away slowly, and avoid running.

We appreciate everyone's cooperation as TWRA continues to monitor these sightings. Please help us keep our community safe by sharing this information.
