๐ค๐๐โค๏ธ Happy Juneteenth! ๐ค๐๐โค๏ธ
Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day or Freedom Day, is the date that celebrates the end of slavery in America and the beginning of a life of freedom for African-Americans living in America.
On January 1st, 1863, Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation into law announcing: โThat all persons held as slaves are, and henceforward shall be free.โ However, it wasnโt until two years later that all enslaved people in Galveston, Texas were actually freed on June 19th, 1865.
โJuneteenth has never been a celebration of victory or an acceptance of the way things are. Itโs a celebration of progress. Itโs an affirmation that despite the most painful parts of our history, change is possibleโand there is still so much work to do.โ โ Barack Obama
Reminder: City offices and the Public Library will be CLOSED Monday, June 22nd in observance of Juneteenth. Offices will reopen on Tuesday, June 23rd at 7:15am.
