Interagency Response Leads to Safe Resolution of Mental Health Incident:

The Newaygo County Sheriff’s Office, Fremont Police Department, and Grant Police Department recently responded to a mental health-related call in Bridgeton Township involving a male who was reportedly walking around the area, yelling at people while holding a firearm.

Due to the nature of the incident, the Newaygo County Sheriff’s Office deployed its drone to assist in locating the individual and providing officers with valuable information about his location and surroundings.

Fortunately, the Sheriff’s Office Emergency Response Team (ERT) was in the area conducting training and was able to quickly respond and assist with the incident. Once on scene, ERT personnel approached the individual and began communicating and negotiating with him.

Through the efforts of the responding officers and ERT members, the situation was peacefully resolved, and the individual was taken into custody without injury to the individual or law enforcement personnel. He was transported to a local hospital for appropriate mental health evaluation and treatment.

The use of the Sheriff’s Office drone played a critical role in this incident by allowing responding personnel to locate and monitor the individual while helping maintain a safe distance between the individual and officers. This technology, combined with the training and expertise of our Emergency Response Team and the cooperation of our law enforcement partners, helped bring this potentially dangerous situation to a safe conclusion.

This incident is another example of the importance of interagency cooperation, specialized training, and technology in protecting both our community and the law enforcement officers who serve it.

112th Street in Bridgeton Twp was closed for a short time.

We would like to thank the Fremont Police Department, Grant Police Department, our Emergency Response Team members, and all responding personnel for their professionalism and dedication in safely resolving this incident.

🚨 LIFE SAVING AWARD 🚨

The Newaygo County Sheriff’s Office is proud to recognize Deputy Peacock and Deputy Sitzema as recipients of the Life Saving Award for their courageous actions that helped save the life of an 11-year-old juvenile.

On August 21, 2026, Deputy Peacock and Deputy Sitzema responded to a medical emergency at a residence in Wilcox Township involving an 11-year-old juvenile who was unresponsive.

Upon arrival, the deputies immediately took action and began performing CPR, continuing lifesaving efforts until LIFE EMS arrived on scene. The juvenile was transported to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, where he is expected to make a recovery.

The juvenile’s father expressed his gratitude to the deputies, stating that without their efforts, his son would not be alive today.

The Life Saving Award may be presented to a Sheriff’s Office employee who takes active measures to save the life of another person when death is imminent and the victim survives or their life is extended as a result of those actions.

Deputy Peacock and Deputy Sitzema demonstrated exceptional courage, professionalism, and dedication to protecting the lives of those they serve.

Ms. McCarthy has been found safe and returned to family.

🚨 MISSING PERSON / WELL-BEING CHECK 🚨

The Newaygo County Sheriff’s Office is requesting the public’s assistance in locating Gay McCarthy, who suffers from dementia and left her residence today.

Ms. McCarthy was last seen at approximately 9:00 AM today driving southbound on M-37 near the White Cloud area.

Description of Ms. McCarthy:
• 5’3”
• Approximately 190 pounds
• Blue eyes
• Wearing a light-colored purple T-shirt
• Wearing checkered-pattern pants

Vehicle:
🔵 Blue 2016 Jeep Compass
🔹 Michigan license plate: EQS2077
⛽ Approximately ¼ tank of gasoline

The Newaygo County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s assistance in locating Charles Ray Simmons.

Mr. Simmons was last seen at approximately 11:30 PM on August 30, 2026, near Hardy Pond in Big Prairie Township.

He was last seen wearing khaki pants, a blue camo button up shirt and had a safari type hat on.
