The National Coalition Against Racism in Sports and Media exists to fight the powerful influence of major media who choose to promulgate messages of oppression. The impetus which formed the NCARSM was the clear case of media coupling imagery with widely held misconceptions of American Indians in the form of sports team identities resulting in racial, cultural, and spiritual stereotyping. The NCARS

M was originally formed in October 1989 during the Chief Illiniwek controversy at the University of Illinois. The NCARSM has been reconstituted in June, 2014 in the Twin Cities. NCARSM, while best known for its front-line demonstrations outside sports stadiums across America has been responsible for an educational effort which has made the issue of racial stereotyping a household discussion. The NCARSM takes a long term view of the struggle against learned hatred and disrespect. We are in a fight against all cases of racism, and against long ingrained willful and self serving ignorance. We strive towards the elimination of the misrepresentation and abuses of all people in sports and media. The components of major media which from public and government opinion includes: film video, sports entertainment, educational institutions, publications, news organization, television, cable satellite, internet, retail practices and merchandising, marketing and radio.

NO HONOR IN RACISM!
Remembering Vernon Bellecourt, Fred Veilleaux, Floyd "Red Crow" Westerman, Phil St. John, Charlene Teters to name a few who spent most of their waking hours addressing this issue. Others both Native and Non-Native have joined the NCARSM over the years in support and in unison to address this contemptible, degrading and reprehensible effort to "Honor" us. It's never been about Honor only about continuing the marginalizing, diminishing, and demeaning of a culture that has been oppressed, enslaved, and exploited ever since Europeans stepped foot on Turtle Island! The work of many helped NCARSM to hold the largest protest and rally in Sports History in November of 2014 at U of MN TCF Bank Stadium Vkings vs Washington. Our voice was heard by Nike, Fed Ex, Amazon, Target and Washingtons minority share holders and continued to be heard to take the action that has brought us to today. Washington will get a new name and we'll check off another team to add to the over 2,500 High School, Colleges, Universities and other entities over the past 4 decades that NCARSM has been responsible for in changing the names and logos of. There is still more work to do and we need your continued support!
Miigwetch / Pidamaya to all of you for your help and support

American Indian leaders and longtime allies hailed a victory many felt was long overdue after more than 30 years of protests over the nicknames of sports teams that have been condemned as racist.

Leading National Civil Rights and Racial Justice Organizations Denounce Murder of George Floyd, Call for Impartial Investigation of Officers Involved

Note: Along with UnidosUS, the following organizations issued this statement today: Advancement Project National Office, Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum, Demos, Faith in Action, NAACP, National Congress of American Indians, National Urban League, and Race Forward.

June 1, 2020

WASHINGTON, DC—As the foremost national coalition of organizations dedicated to civil rights and racial justice, we are both heartbroken and outraged at the brutal and senseless murder of George Floyd by officers of the Minneapolis Police Department. George Floyd becomes the latest in a long and growing line of members of our communities who have needlessly died at the hands of police acting outside of the bounds of the law and their sworn duty to uphold and protect the public. This epidemic of racialized violence must stop, and it must stop now. Bringing it to an end will require the affirmative commitment, solidarity and sustained action of all Americans, from grassroots advocacy to the ballot box.

Our collaborative calls for swift, full, and impartial justice for George Floyd and his family. We call for justice for the many other Black, American Indian, Alaska Native, Latino, Asian, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander people of color who have suffered the same fate at the hands of law enforcement across this country. And we call for justice for the future victims from our communities, who no doubt will lose their lives unless all Americans come together to compel federal, state, and local governments to dismantle the deep-rooted power structures that allow these brutal acts of violence to occur, and then go unpunished. We call for:

The immediate arrest of all of the officers involved in George Floyd’s murder;
President Trump’s appointment of an independent special prosecutor to lead the federal government’s full and impartial investigation of the murder of George Floyd, specifically to determine whether violations of federal hate crimes statutes have occurred and to prosecute those violations accordingly to the full extent of the law;
The systematic reinstitution by the Department of Justice of consent decrees on police departments and municipal governments across this country that have demonstrated patterns of racism towards and mistreatment of people of color;
Congressional oversight hearings, at least annually, to review the status of the implementation of the Death in Custody Reporting Act to compel the collection, reporting and analysis of all deaths, by race and gender, that occur in law enforcement custody, including any while a person is detained or arrested;
Federal, state, and local governments to issue states of emergency declaring racism a public health crisis, and to develop targeted policies to address this crisis; and
All Americans to commit to working with us to dismantle systemic racism that have enabled this scourge of race-based violence to grow unabated.
As the Bishop Desmond Tutu once declared, “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.”

Advancement Project National Office, Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum, Demos, Faith in Action, NAACP, National Congress of American Indians, National Urban League, Race Forward, and UnidosUS are a collaborative of nine leading national racial equity anchor organizations (the Anchors) supported by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Together, we work to promote racial equity, advance racial healing, and ensure that all children, families, and communities have opportunities to reach their full potential.

One Step at a Time!
Miigwetch to MN Land O' Lakes for realizing the American Indian Imagery they used for 92 years finally needed to be retired.

For nearly a century, the Land O’Lakes Indian maiden has kneeled by the side of a blue lake holding out an offering of a 4-stick box of butter. No more. The Minnesota-based farmer cooperative announced earlier this year it redesigned its packaging to focus on celebrating farmers ahead of its 100th...
