In observance of National Volunteer Week, we would like to extend our deepest gratitude to our volunteer firemen. Since August 1986, the Whigham Fire Department has operated as a 100% volunteer fire station. We appreciate the numerous hours they dedicate away from their families to assist other families in need. May these brave firemen and their families continue to receive God's protection, and may the station persist in making a profound difference in the community it serves.

We would like to congratulate our award winners for this year: Griffin Hurst - Rookie Firefighter of the Year, and Al Akridge - Firefighter of the Year. This year, we also introduced a new award in memory of one of our former firemen, Steve Akridge. The award is now named the "Steve Akridge Dedication Award", and his brother Al Akridge was the recipient. Steve loved the Whigham Fire Department and gave everything he had to it. The award is for people who embody that same mentality.

Today, Assistant Chief Chad Gordon, Lieutenant Josh Ausburn, and Firefighter Tanner Todd spent the morning teaching fire safety education at Whigham School

We would like to say thank you to the school for allowing us to share the importance of fire education with the students.

Today we laid to rest one our founding members. While he may not be with us physically his memory and impact on our department will live on forever! Thank you to the City of Cairo for bringing the ladder truck to hoist the flag and pay tribute to our brother. Steve we have the watch from here sir!!!
