Wheeling Lions Club

Wheeling Lions Club Since January 1922, the Wheeling Lions Club has been serving the needs of our community, district, nation and Lions Clubs International.

The Wheeling Lions Club was organized on January 6, 1922 and chartered by Lions International on January 18, 1922. The Wheeling Lions Club is the second oldest club in Multiple District 29 and the first oldest club in District 29-L. It has also had the privilege and honor of sponsoring the formation and organization of Lions Clubs in: Elm Grove, Follansbee, McMechen, Moundsville, Valley Grove, Wa

rwood, Wellsburg, and South Wheeling. During the 90 years of its existence, the Wheeling Lions Club has been increasingly recognized as an essential service club in the community. The Wheeling Lions was the first club to collect “old gold” eye glass frames and use the proceeds from the frames for its sight programs. We continue to recycle used eye glasses with over 4000 collected each year. We have donated testing and other sight related equipment to Ohio County Schools and West Virginia Northern Community College and supply eye exams and glasses to approximately 300 people yearly in the community. We also provide hearing exams and devices to those in need. It was the first service organization in Wheeling to participate in the Salvation Army Christmas Kettle drive. We continue this service as well as Christmas Stockings for the Salvation Army, Easter Seals “Cookie Caper”, Feed the Hungry program at St. Luke’s, Laughlin Chapel after school program, Heritage Trail clean-up, and eye equipment for WVU Children’s Hospital. For many years the club sponsored a West Virginia/Ohio All-Star Basketball Game as a fund raising project. Our current fund raisers include: Spaghetti Dinner, Steak-Fry, Golf Scramble, and Reverse Raffle

For many years the Wheeling Lions honored law enforcement officers with a testimonial dinner. Today, we honor the school nurses in Ohio County with a luncheon and gift of appreciation; the Peace Poster Contest winners with a luncheon, savings bond, and plaque; and the Eye Glass recycling sites with a luncheon and certificate. We promote the youth in the community by sponsoring two LEO Clubs, at Wheeling Park High School and Wheeling Middle School. We are also Partners in Education with Wheeling Middle School. The current officers and members of the Wheeling Lions Club continue to serve the City of Wheeling and surrounding Ohio County Community. We continue to define the motto “WE SERVE” through our time, talents, and gifts.

Important Notice from the Wheeling Lions Club

At this time, the Wheeling Lions Club is temporarily placing all eye screening referrals and vision assistance requests on hold until further notice due to the closure of the optometrist offices at Boscov’s and JCPenney.

We understand how important access to eye care is for our community and are actively working to identify optometrists in the area who are accepting new patients and willing to partner with us.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to establish new referral options. Updates will be shared as soon as additional providers become available.

Thank you for your continued support of the Wheeling Lions Club.

Today, members of the Wheeling Lions Club proudly volunteered at the 2026 Ogden Newspapers Half Marathon Classic.

We would also like to extend a special congratulations to Pat Cronin for completing the 2026 race. With this achievement, Pat has officially completed all 48 Wheeling Half-Marathons. Even more impressively, because he independently ran the course during the two COVID years when the official event was not held, he has now completed 50 consecutive race days — an incredible milestone and testament to his dedication and perseverance.

Today the Whewling Lions Club provided a Welch Allyn® Spoto Vision screener for the pediatric department at Wheeling hosptal. In the past, we’ve supplied Plusoptix instruments for all Ohio County schools to screen school-aged children for eye-related issues. The new Welch Allyn® Spoto Vision screener is specifically designed for younger children. We will soon be proving a similar tool for schools outside the county system. Stay tuned for more information.
