One year ago today, on June 14, our community experienced a day that many of us will never forget.
More than three inches of rain fell in just over an hour. In a matter of hours, lives were turned upside down. Homes were damaged, treasured belongings were lost, lives were lost, and families faced uncertainty and heartbreak. Yet in the midst of the devastation, we witnessed something extraordinary, the strength, compassion, and resilience of the people of the Ohio Valley.
Neighbors helped neighbors. Volunteers showed up without being asked. Donors gave generously. First responders, community organizations, faith groups, and countless individuals worked side by side to help families take their first steps toward recovery.
Today, we remember those difficult days and honor every person whose life was impacted by the flood. We also reflect on the incredible spirit of a community that refused to let anyone face the aftermath alone.
As we reflect on the events of June 14, we also pause to remember the nine precious lives lost in the flood: Jesse Pearson, Travis Creighton, Michael Veronis, Connie Veronis, Sandra Parsons, Lisa McMasters, Kyleigh Minch Shotton, Parker Shotton, and Michel Bokanovich. Their absence is felt every day by their families, friends, and our entire community. The nine crosses standing in front of Triadelphia Methodist Church serve as a powerful and heartfelt reminder of those we lost, a place for reflection, remembrance, and prayer. As a permanent memorial takes shape, it will stand not only as a tribute to the lives taken too soon, but also as a testament to the strength of a community that continues to honor their memory. Though a year has passed, we will never forget them, and their legacy will remain woven into the story of Ohio County.
Recovery is not measured in days or months, and for some, the journey continues. As we mark this one-year anniversary, we remain grateful for every act of kindness, every helping hand, and every person who stood with Ohio County when it mattered most.
From all of us at the United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley, thank you for showing what it means to care for one another. Together, we have weathered the storm, and together, we continue moving forward.
