Introduction to Observational Drawing
Thursdays, from 5-6:30
Feb 3, 10, 17, 24
$25 per class, $75 for all 4. Students who enroll in all 4 will receive a personal 5 piece charcoal set. Max enrollment is 10 students.
8 Class drawing Bundle- people who enroll in this class and the Head Drawing class will get all 8 classes for $135.
C1. Geometry and Value. Students will be introduced to basic techniques for observing and recreating a still life of geometric shapes. We will learn the basic parts of light and shadow and begin to learn how to recreate them.
C2. Graphite vs Charcoal. At the beginning of class we will have a class critique to discuss the strengths of the previous week’s drawings, as well as areas that can be improved. Student will be introduced into the difference between charcoal and graphite. They will again be given the opportunity to recreate a still life from observation.
C3. Charcoal on toned paper. At the beginning of class we will have a class critique to discuss the strengths of the previous week’s drawings, as well as areas that can be improved of . Students will be introduced to the process of drawing with charcoal on toned paper, this will increase their ability to control the media, as well as the values of the still life.
C4. Final Drawing. At the beginning of class we will have a class critique to discuss the strengths of the previous week’s drawings, as well as areas that can be improved. There will be various still life’s set up, and students will be able to choose their preferred media, and attempt to draw their best image so far.
Head Drawing
It is recommended that Introduction to Observational Drawing is taken before this, but not required.

$35 a class, $100 for all 4. Students who enroll in all 4 will receive a 5 piece charcoal set. Again, 10 student maximum.

C1. Anatomy and proportions: Students will be introduced to the idealized proportions of the head. They will then be taught the techniques of how to draw those proportions.
C2. Planes and Values: Students will be instructed how light interacts with the different planes of the head. They will then begin rendering the plane changes as difference in value.
C3. Varied media: We will learn about other techniques and media that can be used to create different portraits. We will do a short critique at the end of class.
C4. Final Drawing (live model) 2 hr class. Student will apply their learnings and draw a live person from observation. We will do a short critique at the end of class.
