WCJC Human Services The Human Services program prepares students for careers in a variety of fields such as psychiatry, Program coursework does address a multicultural emphasis.

The Human Services program will prepare students for careers in a variety of fields such as, but not limited to psychiatry, psychology, human services, social work, child welfare, health, family services, and criminal justice. Graduates will have a strong background in the cores of psychology and sociology; will participate in external learning experiences in a variety of contexts and will be requ

ired to complete a supervised practicum or clinical experience for two consecutive semesters. Effective communication, ethical protocol, interpersonal and time management skills will be emphasized throughout the program. The Human Services program sponsors the Human Services Club; an organization with goals of promoting the general welfare of students majoring in Human Services, providing additional career supportive opportunities, improving school and community relations, and stimulating student participation in encouraging others a sense of empowerment through their volunteer efforts in student/community engagement opportunities.

The Human Services Program of Wharton County Junior College is proud to announce the graduation of students with an Associate of Applied Science degree in Human Services. These graduates worked very diligently not only in the areas of academics, but also completing two challenging Practicum field experiences. The majority of students/graduates continue their education with the University of Houston, Victoria with a BAAS in Psychology or with Springfield College (Houston) with a BA in Human Services. Graduates are employed in agencies/organizations within surrounding communities as well as in the Sugarland and Houston areas. We are so very proud of our graduates and are excited for their new careers within the diverse fields within Human Services.

Victoria Schultz Attended the Crisis Center Grand Opening/Social Event in Wharton yesterday evening (April 21st) and it was a sensational hit in the Wharton Community!! It was also an opportunity to have a photo shoot with her graduates who work for the Center! They are such an asset to our communities!!💕

Wharton County Junior College hostes a Student Awards Ceremony on April 21, 2022, in recognition of Student Achievement for the academic year of 2021-2022. Ms. Ashley Dawson is the recipient of the Academic Achievement and Outstanding Service Award from the Department of Human Services. Ms. Dawson is graduating in May and will continue pursuing her BAAS in Psychology from the University of Houston, Victoria.

April is the month of Awareness of Sexual Assault and the Prevention of Child Abuse. The Women's Crisis Centers of Matagorda and Wharton counties educate communities through awareness, knowledge, and services for individuals experiencing domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse. The Human Services Club of Wharton County Junior College participated in this event which was themed "Your Voice Matters" in El Campo, April 7th and in Bay City, April 8th. A number of community agencies also participated allowing the opportunity for surrounding communities to become more aware.

The Human Services Club provided information about Wharton County Junior College, the Allied Health Programs, and provided a ring-toss game for the children, although some adults had a great time playing as well! The Easter Bunny made an appearance and we made certain we were in a picture!

This event, as a number of other community events, the opportunity for a WCJC Human Services Program reunion. Program students, alumni of the program, and the Program Director - Victoria Schultz, join together for a photo op and a chance to get together and catchup.

On March 29th, The Crisis Center hosted a "Coffee and Caseworkers" (held at the new Wharton location on Fulton Street) event to recognize professionals during March which is Social Worker Appreciation Month. Coffee and refreshments were provided to honor the Wharton County "Finest Social Workers" in which all agencies were welcome. Kelli Wright is the Executive Director of The Crisis Centers of Wharton and Matagorda Counties. Brittany Matthews is the Deputy Director of these Crisis Centers and a graduate of the Human Services Program.

The Coffee and Caseworkers Event served as a Student/Program Director reunion. These students are graduates of the Human Services Program, have continued their educational pursuits as well and have obtained employment within our surrounding communities.

The Human Services Club is preselling t-shirts through noon Thursday, September 30th. This t-shirt is to support the importance of education and the awareness of the need for prevention, early detection and intervention. The t-shirt was designed by the students in the club with the desire to let those impacted by breast cancer know there are many who wish to provide support in this challenge by raising the level of awareness and need for prevention, early detection and intervention.
The Human Services Club wishes to remember and acknowledge the strength and courage for those currently facing this challenge and acknowledge the tenacity of loved ones who succumbed to this disease. Disclaimer: Due to the pandemic availability of color may change depending on the size ordered. The color will still be in gray, i.e. charcoal, heather gray, a shade of darker gray. We hope to receive them the week of October 11th. Due to this inconvenience and impact of the pandemic, we have adjusted the price to s-xl $15.00 and $18.00 for sizes 2xl-4xl. Haley Hughes represented the Human Services Club by volunteering at the Car Seat Event held on Wharton Campus on September 22nd. TXDOT, Wharton Police Department, Wharton County Junior College along with resident assistants, dorm students, Human Services student (Haley Hughes) and the Pioneers' volleyball team who all made this event a success by the 41 car seat checks and 34 new car seats issued which qualified according to specific criteria.

Hats off to all taking the time to assist in serving to meet the needs of the Wharton Community and a special Hats Off for Haley Hughes!!

The Human Services AAS Degree will prepare students for careers in a variety of fields such as, but not limited to, psychiatry, psychology, human services, social work, child welfare, health, family services, criminal justice, substance abuse, education, or working in an environment assisting the homeless. Job titles might include human service worker, case management aide, social work assistant, community support worker, mental health assistant, community outreach worker, life skills counselor or gerontology aide. Working conditions may vary considerably. Some may work in offices, clinics, and hospitals, while other graduates may work in group homes, shelters, day programs or may spend their time in the field visiting clients. Human service assistants may provide direct and indirect client services. Students will be trained to observe patients and record information, conduct patient interviews, implement treatment plans, employ problem-solving techniques, handle crisis intervention matters, use proper case management and referral procedures, and develop an awareness of elements relative to a multi-culturally diverse community population. Graduates will have a strong background in the appropriate cores of psychology and sociology; will participate in external learning experiences in a variety of contexts; and will be required to complete a supervised practicum or clinical experience for two consecutive semesters completing 125 hours each semester. Effective communication, ethical protocol, interpersonal and time management skills will be emphasized throughout the program. Program coursework does address a multicultural emphasis.

Deadline for Fall 2021 start is end of April 2021.
