HURRICANE WATCHES ISSUED FOR NEW LONDON, MIDDLESEX AND NEW HAVEN COUNTIES…TROPICAL STORM WATCH ISSUED FOR FAIRFIELD COUNTY…

LANDFALL NOW EXPECTED IN SOUTHEASTERN CT ALONG THE RI BORDER…

At 11:00 AM Tropical Storm (T.S.) Henri was located at Lat. 30.4 North Long. 73.7 West or approximately 345 miles south southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. T.S. Henri is moving to the northwest at 7 MPH with maximum sustained winds of 65 MPH.

T.S. Henri is forecast to turn to the north northeast by later today. Henri is then forecast to accelerate up the U.S. east coast (remaining 200 – 300 miles off-shore) becoming a Category I hurricane by tomorrow afternoon. Henri is then forecast to make landfall near Stonington, CT along the RI border, Sunday evening between 7:00 – 8:00 PM as a Strong Tropical Storm with sustained winds of 70 MPH and gusts to 85 MPH.

Moderate to Major Coastal Flooding Possible: High tide on Sunday occurs in New London at 9:49 AM and 10:10 PM and in Bridgeport at 11:52 AM and 12:10 AM Monday morning. A storm surge of 2 – 4 feet is expected to cause high end moderate flooding along the west and central coast for the evening high tides. Major flooding is possible in southeastern CT.

Moderate River and Major Urban Flooding Possible: Rainfall in central Connecticut has been well above normal during the past week and soils are nearly saturated. Rainfall along the coast has actually been below normal for the same time period. Henri is expected to bring 2’- 4” of rainfall to western and central CT and 4” – 6” of rainfall to eastern CT which may cause moderate to major urban flooding and moderate river and stream flooding Sunday evening.

Moderate to Major Tree and Powerline Damage Possible: Winds may gust to 60 – 85 MPH at times in eastern CT Sunday evening and gusts to 40 – 60 MPH in western and central CT. These wind speeds could cause moderate tree and powerline damage in western CT and major tree and powerline damage in Eastern CT.

The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security will continue to closely monitor the track of Henri.

The next update will be sent out at 6:00 PM this evening.
