I would like to post a correction of Channel 8 news story broadcast tonight. Channel 8 reported that 33% of westbank restaurants mislabel that they are serving local shrimp and seafood when in fact they serve imported shrimp, crawfish and other seafood. Then Channel 8 listed a number of west bank restaurants that do serve locally caught seafood. One big problem, they failed to list that Segnette landing only serves locally caught shrimp, crawfish, seafood. Segnette Landing does not serve ANY imported seafood. And we do this at great expense to us. Locally sourced seafood is much superior and much more expensive.
But we believe our customers deserve the best. I hope Channel 8 has the decency to correct their broadcast as it could damage our business. Segnette Landing should have been listed as one of the few restaurants exclusively serving locally caught Louisiana seafood.
We have signage throughout the restaurant proudly proclaiming this. In fact, The lieutenant governor even chose Segnette landing to film a commercial announcing the new seafood labeling legislation when it first came out. Please come see and taste the difference for yourself.

According to the National Weather Service, there is a medium (40%) chance of tropical cyclone development in the northern Gulf late this week. Regardless of development, the system will bring multiple rounds of heavy rain during the Wednesday through Sunday timeframe, with the greatest threat Thursday, July 17, 2025, and Friday, July 18, 2025. Jefferson Parish is working closely with the National Weather Service, as well as state and local partners, and will update residents should impacts increase.

While all of Jefferson Parish’s 194 drainage pumps are operational, high rainfall rates could overwhelm capacity at times, resulting in street flooding and a localized flash flooding threat. Areas that see the most rain could experience more significant flash flooding, especially if there aren’t sufficient breaks between rounds of heavy rain to allow drainage to catch up.

In preparation, residents are asked to clear debris from streets and drains around their property to help reduce the risk of street flooding; such debris impedes water flow into the drainage system. If streets start to retain water, please stay off the roads to prevent pushing water into homes and businesses. During heavy rain, drivers should use caution around areas prone to significant street flooding, like streets under bridges and overpasses. Parish Ordinance Section 36-188 prohibits motorists from traveling on flooded streets, which may increase the possibility of structural flooding due to wake action caused by moving vehicles. Residents are also reminded to stay indoors and away from windows during severe weather events.

Residents in need of assistance can contact the Jefferson Parish Emergency Operations Center at (504) 349-5360.

Residents are asked to remain vigilant, stay weather aware, have multiple ways to receive weather alerts (TV, radio, etc.), and make sure to charge mobile devices and keep them nearby. To receive weather and emergency alerts from Jefferson Parish, text JPALERT or JPNOTICIAS to 888-777. Hour-by-hour forecasts for specific locations can be accessed at www.weather.gov/neworleans by using the point and click map in the middle of the page.

Stay weather aware.

Things seem to be locking in on a secondary landfall in Louisiana late week, Thursday or Friday. I still only see this as a weaker storm. Whether it gets the name Dexter or not - that doesn’t matter! Impacts remain the same…rain!

A couple things to remember, weaker storms aren’t always that organized. So who cares where the center goes, where do the rainbands go? This system may be weird where the heaviest rains will be on the south side of it. These small details need to be ironed out over the next 24 hours.

Westwego Assistant Fire Chief Lonny Taylor Graduates from Louisiana Fire Chief’s Academy

Fire Chief Ken Bouvier is proud to announce that Assistant Fire Chief Lonny Taylor of the Westwego Fire Department has successfully completed the State of Louisiana’s inaugural Fire Chief’s Academy, becoming the first firefighter from Westwego Fire Department to achieve this distinction.

The two-year executive development program, launched in 2024, is designed to prepare senior fire service leaders for the challenges of modern emergency management, strategic leadership, and public safety administration.

Today in Baton Rouge, Chief Taylor officially graduated from the program as a Certified Fire Executive (CFE), joining a select group of fire service professionals recognized for their commitment to excellence, leadership, and service.

"Chief Taylor’s accomplishment represents not only personal dedication but also a major milestone for the Westwego Fire Department,” said Westwego Fire Chief Ken Bouvier during the announcement. “Completing this rigorous academy demonstrates his leadership and vision for the future of fire service.

The Louisiana Fire Chief’s Academy curriculum includes advanced training in emergency response management, interagency coordination, ethics, personnel development, and public policy. The program was developed in partnership with the Louisiana Fire Chiefs Association.

Westwego Fire Chief Lonny Taylor expressed gratitude for the opportunity and credited the support of his department and community. “This achievement is the result of the hard work and mentorship I’ve received throughout my career,” said Taylor. “I’m honored to represent Westwego and committed to using this experience to strengthen the department and better serve the citizens of Westwego".
