Continuing our series of post from our historic Westville Calendar as we connect the past to the present, August was dedicated to Latoz Hardware as they celebrated their 80th Anniversary this month. Proudly Serving and a Westville Tradition Since 1946. Here is a “then and now” look and a thank you from the Latoz Family for supporting their family business for the last 80 years. Here is a vintage, convex bubble-glass wall hanging featuring a three-dimensional dried floral arrangement in a basket that you can see at the Westville Depot Museum. Vacketta Grocery (often recalled as Vacketta Brothers Grocery) was a prominent, historic family-owned grocery store located in Westville, Illinois. Run by the uncles of the local Vacketta family, the store served as a staple neighborhood market for Westville residents during the 20th century. It was a classic example of the community-centered, hometown businesses that defined the era in Vermilion County. While the original Vacketta Grocery is no longer in operation, the lineage of hometown grocery service in Westville continues today through establishments like Ken's Westville IGA.

Elect Lumsargis Sheriff. Button or pinback as they were called has been donated to the depot museum by Gary Delhaye. Some background. Walter “Lum" Lumsargis lived in Westville and served as the Sheriff of Vermilion County, Illinois. Before being elected sheriff, he spent years in local law enforcement, notably serving as an Illinois State Police trooper. According to the Illinois Sheriffs' Association, he served his term as sheriff from 1978 to 1982. He is frequently cited by regional law enforcement veterans and community members as an influential and well-respected officer in the area. He also served several terms on the County board,after being elected sheriff.

How Westville contributed to the Origins of Boccie Ball. This game is a very important part of our village history when several nationalities began their immigration journey to Westville. The Westville Depot Museum has two sets of Boccie Balls. One old set donated by Jim Nigra including the little white ball called the Jack or Pallina and newer version donated by Charles William “Bill” Snook. You can see these when you visit our museum.

It was an honor to present Latoz Hardware with a certificate on behalf of The Westville Depot Historical Society during their 80th Anniversary Open House on August 1, 2026. Latoz Hardware is a long-standing, family-owned staple located at 147 North State Street in Westville, Illinois. Known for its classic small-town atmosphere and friendly service. The store specializes in hard-to-find hardware parts alongside an extensive selection of housewares and unique goods. Happy 80th Anniversary Latoz Hardware. “Still Going Strong”. Here is July 2026 from our Westville Calendar, Connecting The Past to The Present for all to enjoy. The Westville Depot and Museum had this calendar made to correspond with the Bicentennial of Vermilion County as well as for our Freedom Celebration to honor our Village, County and Country. This month shows St. Mary’s Church, then and now. 27 more months to go. If you still haven’t gotten your calendar they are available at Latoz Hardware, The Westville Public Library, The Westville Depot or through me. $20.
