Frank Gabehart and Gary Delhaye teamed up with this new idea for the Westville Depot. Once given the photos, Frank designed and cut out the coal miners. Then the miners were given a coat of black and added weight to the backside plus a solid base to aid in mounting and protection against wind and other elements. Here are the first two Coal Miners that were built for the Depot. Frank always does great work anytime he is called upon. A third miner is coming soon. All miners were donated anonymously.

Presenting our new mural at the Westville Depot and Museum. Westville, Illinois was established in 1873, Westville transformed from a quiet agricultural settlement into a booming coal mining powerhouse in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Our committee wanted to capture the rich heritage of our coal mining history and rail transportation from the early steam engine days. The region's rich coal reserves attracted thousands of immigrants, creating a multi-ethnic melting pot that heavily influenced the town's culture. This is how Westville became known as The Melting Pot of Nations. Coal mining began in the area around 1880, but the industry truly boomed starting in 1885 when Mike Kelly opened multiple coal mines in Westville and surrounding areas of Grape Creek, Hawbuck and Belgium. The Railroad Connection once thrived in our village. The Chicago and Eastern Illinois (C&EI) rail line extended through Westville to transport coal, sparking rapid population growth and linking the town directly to Chicago's industrial markets. This mural is a gift to Westville for all to enjoy. Painted by local artist Mike Harper from Art As A Mission.
