Town of Minisink Heritage Commission

Town of Minisink Heritage Commission We are dedicated to preserving the history of the Town of Minisink for all generations--past, present and future. The slaves were freed in 1827.

The Town of Minisink was formed March 7, 1788 and included present day Port Jervis, part of the Town of Deerpark and also the Towns of Greenville and Wawayanda. Tradition says that the origin of the name "Minisink" comes from the Minsi or Munsee Indians. The meaning is "People of stony country" or "Mountaineers" of "land from which water is gone". The Dutch governed this land from 1621 to 1644 whe

n the English rules until after the Revolution. New York and New Jersey fought over this land from 1703-1768, during the boundary line dispute. During the 1700's the Indians raided the settlements. The Railroad came through Minisink in 1867, changing our community from self-sufficient to industrialized. Over the past 300 years, ten wars have touched the residents of Minisink. In the late 1700's children were taught at home. Later, neighborhood one and two room schools were built. By 1958, the Minisink Valley Central School was built. Life in Minisink has changed greatly over the years. We have emerged from a farming community to a bedroom community.
