Today, Fire Marshal Terrence Dunn represented the Westport Fire Department at Connecticut Children’s Summer Safety News Conference in Westport.

During the event, Fire Marshal Dunn spoke about the dangers of fireworks and the serious injuries they can cause, particularly to children.

Firework Safety PSA:
• Leave fireworks to trained professionals and attend public displays whenever possible.
• Never allow children to handle or ignite fireworks.
• Sparklers can burn at temperatures exceeding 2,000°F and can cause severe burns.
• Keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby if using legal novelty devices.
• Never relight a malfunctioning firework.
• Maintain a safe distance from any fireworks activity.
• Avoid using fireworks while impaired by alcohol or drugs.
• Properly dispose of used fireworks by soaking them in water before discarding.

A safe celebration starts with smart decisions. As we approach the Fourth of July holiday, Westport Fire encourages everyone to put safety first and leave fireworks to the professionals.
