Brief Update regarding the Mid-City Fire. As of 3:30 a.m. crews remain on scene working on extinguishing deep seated pockets of fire within the scrap pile.

The fire department was dispatched to a reported scrap pile fire, containing processed vehicles, at approximately 3:34 yesterday afternoon. First arriving companies encountered heavy fire and smoke. Mutual companies from throughout the county and neighboring Rhode Island were requested for assistance.

Embers from the fire fueled by strong winds created several extensive brushfires adjacent to the scrapyard along Davis Road. These fires have been controlled and the areas along Davis Road are being monitored throughout the night.

A shelter in place order was initiated early on, followed by assistance with evacuating those residents looking for overnight shelter who were located in the smoke plume path. Accommodations were made at a local hotel. The State Haz-Mat team and DEP are monitoring air quality throughout the area, including Davis Road and the EPA is expected here around 4 a.m. to continue air quality management throughout the day.

We are making plans to open Rt 6 for the morning traffic however there will be delays and we encourage everyone that can avoid the area to please avoid the area.

The cause is under investigation.

More information will be passed along when possible.
