Yesterday, the Westport Commission on People with Disabilities acknowledged March as National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month! The text reads as follows:

THE Westport Commission on People with Disabilities COMMISSION ON PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES CELEBRATES

National Developmental Disability Awareness Month
March 2024

We believe in a Westport that recognizes the unlimited potential of all citizens, including those with developmental disabilities, to work and live in our communities.

Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month is an opportunity to recognize the importance of ensuring inclusive environments with equal Access to communication, education, employment, housing, transportation, and public accommodations.

Westport supports those with Developmental Disabilities in making their own decisions, living where and with whomever they choose, and receiving the support they need to be successful, productive, and independent community members.

Westport's Commission on People with Disabilities is working to improve Westport by promoting equality of opportunity, Access, and choice for Westporters with developmental disabilities. We are committed to the promise of a Westport in which all people with Developmental Disabilities have the knowledge, opportunity, and influence to make a difference in their lives and the lives of others.

Every March, the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD) and its partners collaborate to lead Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month (DDAM). The annual campaign highlights how people with and without disabilities come together to form strong communities. DDAM raises awareness of the inclusion and contributions of people with developmental disabilities (DD) in all aspects of community life and serves as a time to explore the work still needed to remove barriers.

NACDD's 2024 theme, A World of Opportunities, focuses on people working together to remove obstacles to building communities where everyone can do well and succeed.
