It has been a busy shift today with Group 1 responding to several fire and EMS incidents throughout the day and early evening, including a mutual aid response to Rt 6 in Dartmouth near the town line, where Engine 3, Rescue 1, and Car 1 responded to assist with a motor vehicle crash.

Shortly afterwards, crews responded to a report of 2 vehicles on fire in a driveway in close proximity of a home located off of Rt 177. Engine 1, 3 and Ladder 7, aided by on-call and off-duty firefighters, quickly knocked the fire down and there was no damage to the structure.

Firefighter/paramedics were then dispatched to assist the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad and Westport Police with the disposal of several antiquated pieces of military ordnance that were found in a home that was being cleaned out. Forestry 1, Rescue 2 and Car 1 responded to the incident. The Westport Highway department assisted with the setup of an area that allowed for the safe disposal of the devices that were burned off by the MSP Bomb Squad.

Shortly after getting back in service from the Bomb Squad assist, Engine 1 was dispatched to a dumpster fire off of Hixbridge Road, which was quickly extinguished.

Rescue 2 is currently out on a medical and the Group has 10 hours remaining in their 24 hour shift.

Strong work by the crews today (as always).

**Press Release – Engine Co. 2 Struck by Motor Vehicle on Route 24**

During the early morning hours of June 2, Engine Co. 2 was operating at the scene of a motor vehicle crash involving a State Police cruiser. While firefighters were working to secure the scene, Engine Co. 2 was positioned on the highway with all emergency warning lights activated to protect responders and the public.

Approximately 20 minutes later, and without warning, Engine Co. 2 was struck from behind by a motor vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed.

Fortunately, no firefighters were injured. However, Engine Co. 2 sustained significant damage and had to be towed from the scene.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers first responders face every day while operating on our roadways. Firefighters, police officers, EMS personnel, tow operators, and highway workers all depend on drivers to remain alert and obey Move Over laws.

Today, we were fortunate that no one was seriously injured or killed. The outcome could have been much different.

When approaching an emergency scene:

🚨 Slow Down
🚨 Move Over When Safe to Do So
🚨 Stay Alert and Avoid Distractions

Help us make sure everyone goes home safely at the end of their shift.

We’d like to thank BJs Wholesale for their donation of a pallet of drinking water to our department.
