We recently celebrated a major achievement here at West Point Fire Department. Our valiant Fire Chief Gary Cheesman has been serving the West Point community for 50 years! Gary is not one to look for a grand event filled with balloons and confetti, but his devotion to our community is definitely worth a pat on the back and a few kind words. Gary joined the fire service as a young man and has been a major asset to the department and the community ever since. Even after 50 years or service and a handful of birthdays, Gary is still our top responding member. If we get a call at 2:00 in the afternoon or 2:00 in the morning you’ll find Gary responding to the emergency. We here at West Point Volunteer Fire Department say Thank You to Gary Cheesman for 50 years of unwavering commitment to the West Point community.

Today, we had the opportunity to assist Shadeland Fire Department and Tippecanoe County Sheriff Department with Public Safety Day at Southwestern Middle School. We were able to teach the students about our ambulance as well as show the operation of the Auto Pulse, our automated CPR device. We then participated in an auto extrication presentation with Shadeland and Randolph Fire Departments where we showed the students the functionality of extrication tools. We always enjoy working with other departments and being able to give back to the community through educational opportunities. Thank you to Shadeland Fire and Tippecanoe County Sheriff Department for inviting us.

This past week we were saddened to hear of the passing of one of our former members. Jackie Allen proudly served the West Point community as an EMT from 1980 until 1991. Jackie was a wonderful person and a devoted member to our department. We will always remember her and thank her for the service she provided to the West Point community.

Our recent fire training focused on venting structures with metal exteriors. This exercise gave our members an opportunity to use all the different tools we have in our tool box to gain familiarity and find advantages and disadvantages in a controlled environment.

Venting a structure is an important piece of the fire service as it helps to remove smoke and heat from inside the structure. Less heat and less smoke makes the fire fighters job safer and easier.

We’re experiencing our first dose of beautiful weather and the urge to burn all those sticks and leaves left behind by the long winter is strong, but we request that you do so with extra caution. Throughout the day area fire departments have been busy extinguishing grass and field fires. Today’s warm sun, low humidity, and steady wind are a terrible recipe to help a fire to get out of control.

Please be careful and always have a water source nearby if you plan to have an open burn.

With the help of the Tippecanoe County Hazmat Team we were able to refresh ourselves on identifying hazardous materials incidents, and initial scene management of hazmat emergencies. We are fortunate to have multiple qualified hazmat teams in our immediate area. These Hazmat teams are well equipped with knowledge and the necessary tools to respond to events of all sizes. Again, Thank you to Tippecanoe County Hazmat and the Indiana State Fire Marshalls office for sharing their wealth of expertise with West Point Fire Department as well as members from Shadeland Fire Department.

As the weather changes, we know many residents are cleaning up yards and considering outdoor burning. Before you strike that match, take a minute to review the Indiana Burn Law. When you do burn, notify the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Department at 765-423-9321 and dispatch will make sure everyone is aware.
