Thanks to all the firefighters today!

On this International Firefighters’ Day, we honor the brave members of Oregon’s fire service who stand watch over our communities, day and night, on every planet (or just across the state).

Your courage, strength, and dedication are legendary.

May the FOURTH be with YOU, Oregon firefighters. Today, and every day, we salute your service.

East Umatilla Fire & Rescue is having a surplus sale April 24-26th at the Adam's Station (Station 64) from 8am to 5pm each day. It's a mishmash of all types of old equipment that our combined fire departments don't need anymore and just need to clear this stuff out. Any questions you may have, please call the Fire Department directly at 541-566-2311 and either ask for Chief Baty, Andy Fournell Jeremy Lasater or Travis Zimmerman.

CHIEF’S REPORT for March 2026,
Calls for Service in February 2026 = 26
EMS = 17 Fire = 8 MVA = 1 Mutual Aid = 0
22 days of no calls or 1 call for service
1) Winter/Spring Safety. Whether it be traction tires, or shoe chains on-duty or off: use caution during inclement winter conditions. Just one Ground Level Fall or MVA can make a lifestyle change for you.
2) Open burning is allowed on burn days (as determined by Umatilla County) only. Burn permits must be issued
3) Maintenance – The Spartan engine is back in service. L-62 is OOS due to a leaking seal. It will be repaired when the kit arrives. L-61 IS IN SERVICE.
4) Wash your PPE: After each fire or smoke exposure or after use on scene, or quarterly. After each IDLH entry be sure to exchange your nomex hood (with the IC) for a clean one when you exchange your SCBA bottle. Also, wash YOURSELF – especially wrists, necks and armpit-type areas. REMEMBER to get your gear rinsed-washed at the scene (gross decon). WE HAVE washing towletts that can be used on scene, but take a cleansing shower when you return to your quarters. Cancer and Heart disease kills more firefighters than housefires or MVA’s.
5) Bulletin Boards: on the East side of the vehicle bay, there are two: one is a cork board showing ODF burn permit locations. The other is a Safety Bulletin board with updates and advisories.
6) OSHA has been asked to make an inspection of our seven work facilities. This will take place in early April.
7) Retirement. The Fire Chief’s last official day is June 30, 2026. It has been a pleasure serving this region.

A MESSAGE FROM ODOT ON THE I-84 CLOSURE

"Conditions on I-84 right now are challenging. Winter weather is occurring throughout the corridor between Pendleton and Ontario, and much of the interstate is currently closed due to multiple spun out vehicles and crashes. Our crews are reporting seeing many trucks without chains on despite the current chain restrictions. Our crews cannot effectively treat the roads when unchained, spun out vehicles are blocking. If you must travel today, please make sure that you and your vehicle are prepared. Tripcheck.com will be up-to-date with what locations and directions of I-84 and other local highways are impacted. Smaller, local highways are not a detour route when I-84 is closed, and many are open to local traffic only. Do not wait on the interstate for it to open, please stay off the interstate where you have access to resources until you see on Tripcheck that it has reopened. Our crews are out in force, and we will open roads as soon as they are passible and it’s safe to do so."
