Roxbury Weston Programs, Inc.

Roxbury Weston Programs, Inc. Roxbury Weston Preschool is the longest running culturally diverse education program in the country.

Roxbury Weston Programs creates an open and intentional environment of cultural, socio-economic, linguistic, and cognitive diversity. Guiding children’s experiences alerts them to their world around them and transforms their learning and understanding. Our children emerge as socially aware and conscious thinkers, which carries them throughout their school career and well into their adult life. Rox

bury Weston Preschool recognizes the developmental needs of the whole child with equal emphasis placed on physical, emotional, social, and intellectual growth. Teachers design the curriculum to meet each child’s individual interests and needs, understanding that each child learns at his or her own pace and in his or her own way and time. The preschool and after school program have been visited by members of the Boston Public Schools, the Schott Principals Fellowship, as well as leaders from the Weston Public School system. Two doctoral candidates from different institutions have conducted research at the preschool and CATCH exploring curriculum content and methodology. Our teachers from the preschool work diligently to align the standards, curriculum, instruction, and assessments within and across the preschool years through 3rd grade in order to bridge the early (PK) and elementary (1st-3rd) education experiences. This supports our children in learning the skills they require to succeed in school and in life. The standards, curriculum, instruction and assessments focus on social competence and self-discipline as well as academic skills. This quality of education has an enormous impact on a child’s lifelong learning and positively contributes to their health and development with a greater readiness for success in school and in life.

RoxWes Honors Black History Month

As we enter Black History Month, we are excited to share how we honor this important time with our preschoolers and how it connects deeply to our school's history and mission.

Our preschool opened its doors in 1965, during the heart of the Civil Rights Movement—a time when communities across the country were advocating for fairness, equity, and inclusion. From the very beginning, our school was founded on the belief that every child deserves to feel valued, respected, and celebrated. That belief continues to guide us today.

During Black History Month, we focus on age-appropriate ways to help children learn about diversity, kindness, and the importance of treating everyone with fairness and respect. Through stories, music, art, and conversations, children are introduced to influential Black leaders, authors, artists, and everyday heroes who have helped shape our world. We also celebrate the beauty of different cultures by highlighting traditions, skin tones, hair textures, and family experiences in positive and affirming ways.

For our preschoolers, this learning is rooted in connection and empathy. We talk about being good friends, standing up for others, and appreciating what makes each of us unique. These lessons are woven naturally into our daily routines and play, helping children build a strong foundation of inclusion and belonging.

Black History Month is one of many opportunities throughout the year when we live out our mission of celebrating diversity and inclusion. We are proud of our history and grateful to partner with our families as we continue to nurture a community where every child and family feels seen, respected, and valued.

Our RoxWes preschoolers honored Dr. Martin Luther King Jr by creating art collages that expressed their thoughts and feelings about inclusion and kindness. This activity also reflects our mission at Rox Wes that "all children matter and are celebrated"!

Honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

As we prepare to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we want to take a moment to reflect on why this day holds special meaning for our RoxWes school community.

Our Preschool was founded during the Civil Rights Movement, a time when people across the country were courageously working to create a more just and loving world. From the very beginning, our mission has been grounded in the beliefs and words of Dr. King — that every person has value, that kindness and fairness matter, and that we can all help make the world better through our actions.

In our classrooms, honoring Dr. King means helping children learn, in age-appropriate ways, about caring for one another, respecting differences, using kind words, and standing up for what is right. Through stories, conversations, and classroom activities, we will explore ideas of friendship, fairness, and inclusion — values that are at the heart of Dr. King’s message and our school’s mission.

We believe that even our youngest learners can begin to understand that their choices matter and that love and respect are powerful tools for change. Together with our school community, we strive to nurture children who feel valued, who value others, and who grow into thoughtful members of their community.
