“Every time we take money out of people’s pockets it makes it harder for them to just provide for themselves.” A new payroll tax in Maryland is coming January 2027 - it’s another thing that punishes employees and workers with the promise of some paid time off if you qualify but you’ll be paying all the time. There is a way to stop it - elect people in November who will come to Annapolis and help us fight to repeal or at least dramatically change this mandate - we’ve succeeded in pushing it off once, we could do it again. This ruling by the Maryland Supreme Court is disappointing and very concerning. How can a General Assembly action that violates an established law surrounding ballot initiatives along with putting what the court acknowledges was a deceptive wording be something that the Court simply makes an adjustment to and allows to go forward? This Court is aiding and abetting the deceptive behavior of our state’s one-party supermajority.

The General Assembly failed to follow the very election law passed by a unanimous bipartisan vote - the court has cast this violation aside. Even with the Court’s changes to the question language, the ballot initiative does not explain the practical consequences of this amendment passing, that it removes protections under the Maryland Declaration of rights for citizens in regards to redistricting, giving Annapolis politicians sole power. The only way to stop this now is for voters to reject this power-and-rights grab by voting down Question 3 at the ballot box in November and I look forward to campaigning actively to defeat it.

***Update: The court has adjourned until tomorrow after hearing arguments and asking some very in depth questions. We will see if a ruling comes tonight or tomorrow.***

Today is the big day at the Maryland Supreme Court where our cases against the Democratic General Assembly/Governor Moore constitutional amendment initiative - which was passed despite us being weeks past the deadline in law for putting an initiative on the ballot - will be heard after lower courts sided with us. Hoping for another strong, positive outcome!

The Maryland Supreme Court will hear oral arguments today on “Question Three,” a ballot measure proposed by the General Assembly that could pave the way for congressional redistricting. More in the comments.

Had meetings in Westminster yesterday and grabbed a quick lunch at JeannieBird Baking Company on Main Street. I’d had breakfast items, pastries and beverages before but hadn’t been there for lunch. Phenomenal sandwiches and salads - really enjoyed it and had excellent service, another fantastic local business in District 5 and Carroll County!

A new, first of its kind tax on an essential but largely mobile service industry taking in way less than projected? You don’t say! And how many jobs, how much investment is it costing Maryland? A lot. Another reason private sector job growth is flat in our state - another reason to vote for real change this fall from Governor to General Assembly - end the one party supermajority that is ramming these kinds of destructive policies though.

Had a great time in Mount Airy Saturday for their community celebration that included placing a time capsule in honor of America’s 250th Anniversary that will be opened in 50 years - and we honored retiring Mayor Larry Hushour for his years of service to the town and our country in the Air Force as well. It was a beautiful evening on the border of Southwestern Carroll County and Southeastern Frederick County!

From WBFF FOX 45 - “Maryland workers will soon see a new deduction from their paychecks as the state prepares to launch its Family and Medical Leave Insurance program, known as FAMLI. (Passed way back in 2023 and delayed) beginning Jan. 1, 2027…For someone earning $75,000 a year, the employee contribution would amount to about $337.50 annually.

State Sen. Justin Ready argues the additional payroll cost (is wrong policy). ‘It’s going to really hurt people who are right on the edge economically and take money out of their paycheck every week for something that they might get a chance to avail themselves of at some point, but they’ll be paying all the time,” Ready said.” Full story in comments ->

From Maryland Matters: “It should not be this confusing for a voter,” Judge S. James Sarbanes (appointed by Governor O’Malley) wrote. Another court win for Maryland voters - this case will now move to the Supreme Court.” Outstanding work by Senator Chris West, a member of our Carroll County delegation and one of the plaintiffs in this case.
