Local public safety does not have your contact information if you don't register with us. Don't be confused by the alerts you get from the National Weather Service and FEMA. Federal agencies are able to broadcast alerts and warnings over large areas, but they won't call you with local emergency information. Please register with Lookout Alert so we can reach you during local emergencies.

U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) forecasts thunderstorms with large hail, severe wind gusts and possible tornadoes in parts of the northern Plains throughout today. Be sure to monitor local news and any emergency alerts you receive on your phone to stay informed about severe thunderstorm watches and warnings.

EMERGENCY ALERTS TEST | On Wednesday, June 3, beginning in the morning, Westminster will be part of a regional emergency alerts test. Testing these systems helps ensure we can quickly reach our community when real emergencies occur. Be sure you are ready to receive the alerts with a few simple steps:

Lookout Alert
▪ Westminster’s localized opt-in system, with alerts from Westminster Police and Fire
▪ Receive critical alerts through text, phone calls, and email – whether you are home or not!
▪ Registration required at: www.LookoutAlert.co

Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA)
▪ Push alerts sent directly to cell phones in a specific geographic area
▪ Often used for large-scale evacuation orders or weather emergencies
▪ No sign-up required, but ensure that Emergency Alerts are enabled in your phone settings

Not every person will receive every type of alert during the test. Delivery may depend on device settings, wireless carrier participation, phone location, registration information, and other technical factors. Receiving or not receiving this test does not necessarily mean a phone or account is not working. This system-wide test will be in Westminster, Broomfield, Jefferson County, and Clear Creek County.

We encourage you to use this opportunity to confirm you are signed up for local emergency alerts, whether you live in Westminster or elsewhere!

Scattered thunderstorms will develop Monday and Tuesday, with potential for a few severe storms each afternoon and evening. The highest threat of severe storms on Monday will be from the Palmer Divide eastward across the adjacent plains, while Tuesday's threat (depending on cloud cover and heating) could shift across most of the I-25 Corridor and plains of northeast Colorado. Large hail, damaging winds, and even a couple tornadoes will be possible. Stay weather aware and have multiple ways to receive warnings!

05/17/2026

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect on Monday for the mountains for locations above 9000 feet where 5 to 14 inches of snowfall are expected. The foothills can expect 4 to 8 inches of snowfall. Slick roads and hazardous travel can be expected, especially above 8000 feet.

05/17/2026

We are currently forecasting 0.5-1.5 inches of total precipitation for most of the area through Tuesday morning. For the mountains, this will all be snow, while for the foothills the precipitation will start as rain and turn to snow. For the rest of the area, all rain is expected with some snowflakes mixing in for the I-25 corridor and Palmer Divide.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop in the afternoon and evening, both Saturday and Sunday. A few of these storms could become strong to severe. The highest chances of severe storms will be over the northeast Colorado plains, with lower chances further west.

You might feel tempted to jump in after seeing someone struggling in the water, but that can put you in danger, too. A panicked swimmer can accidentally pull you under. Instead, remember these steps:

- Shout to get the attention of a lifeguard, if one is nearby.
- If there is no lifeguard, call 911 or tell someone else to call.
- Reach out with an object — such as a stick or towel — and pull the person to safety.
- Throw a floating object — like a buoy or life jacket — to help them stay afloat.
