Happy Lunar New Year. It was a beautiful day in Orange County, in the heart of Little Saigon, where we celebrated the beginning of the Year of the Horse. Local Orange County leaders and organizations came together for a parade full of celebration.

Freshly Served:

Meet the Cervantez family!

A made in Orange County story built on family, good food, and love for their community.

Since 2006, K&A Downtown Cafe & K&A Catering has been a woman-owned, family-run staple in Historic Downtown Anaheim. Built on generations of cooking, passed down recipes, and a real love for feeding people, they have been serving OC with heart for almost two decades.

They are proud members of The Good Food Hall and the home of The K&A Promise, their nonprofit giving back to the community that raised them.

Whether it is a small family gathering or a celebration with 1,800 guests, K&A shows up the same way every time. With care. With pride. With really good food.

Honored to meet military veteran and community member Miguel Alatorre, co owner of in San Diego’s historic Barrio Logan. The cafe draws inspiration from the neighborhood’s lowrider and cruising culture and often hosts community events and fundraisers.

This veteran owned coffee shop is also the official home of La Vuelta Barrio Logan, a museum and cultural space that celebrates the history of lowriding.

Stop by and try Miguel’s signature drinks, the Tatas Latte and the Horchata Cafe de Olla.

I first learned about Mendez v. Westminster as a college student in my 20s. Years later, as a school board member and city councilman, it became a dream to create a place where busloads of students from and around Orange County could learn about ordinary people who fought for justice and changed history.

Today, that dream lives on in my hometown of Westminster. The Mendez Tribute Monument Park stands as a lasting testament to Orange County’s pivotal role in desegregating California schools, a place where our civil rights legacy is not only remembered but also celebrated for generations to come.

National Hispanic Heritage Month is more than just a time to honor and celebrate notable figures in our nation’s past and present; it’s also a time to honor our most cherished value, La Familia.

On that note, I would like to honor my parents, Sr. & Sra. Sergio & Maria Contreras for their countless sacrifices and contributions to our family.

Mom and Dad risked everything, leaving everything behind in Mexico to start anew in Orange County, eventually becoming U.S. citizens. While Dad worked the graveyard shift as a Disneyland custodian and Mom worked on the factory line, in the classroom as a paraeducator, and took care of six kids, they were able to buy a three-bedroom home to raise six children.
