City of Westland - Administration The City of Westland is the 9th largest city in Michigan with a population of over 86,000. Westland is the area's premier "Shopping and Dining Destination."

The City of Westland is the 10th largest city in Michigan with a population of over 86,000. The City's residential development is an excellent blend single- family homes, apartments and condominiums. This broad selection of housing opportunities is complimented by over 1500 acres of well-maintained parks and nature trails, a highly rated municipal golf course, a skate park and ice arena, a state-of-the-art Library, and novel city park themes that are fun and family-friendly. Westland has the location, the land, the infrastructure, and the leadership, under Mayor, Kevin Coleman, to attract new industry and help existing businesses redevelop properties and to maintain competitiveness in today's global economy. Six modern platted industrial parks on 320 acres are served by class “A” internal roads, with up to date utilities and rail access available within two of the parks. Westland is conveniently located within the center of southeastern Michigan's expressway system, minutes north of Detroit Metropolitan Airport, and ideally located between downtown Detroit and Ann Arbor. Westland Shopping center, one of the country’s original four regional malls, boasts 80 retail stores and has anchored Westland’s commercial district for more than 30 years. Westland’s diversity and progressive planning offers residents a wide variety of life experiences.

Fiber construction is coming to northeast Westland:

Residents in the area between Joy Road and Ann Arbor Trail may soon see Gateway Fiber crews working in their neighborhoods as the company begins installing fiber infastructure.

Gateway Fiber has received the required permits to perform this work within the public right-of-way and utility easements. This is not a City of Westland construction project.

Residents may notice crews, equipment, utility markings, or flags in the area while installation is taking place. Please do not remove utility flags or markings, as they are used to identify underground utilities and help crews work safely.

Questions or concerns regarding the fiber installation or work being performed should be directed to Gateway Fiber at (888) 201-4339.

We appreciate residents’ patience as this work takes place in the northeast portion of the City within the next few weeks.

Citywide Brush Pickup Starts Today:

In response to the recent storms, Westland crews have been responding to emergent requests for fallen trees and large debris. Beginning Tuesday, September 8, the Department of Public Service will begin a citywide sweep of all residential streets to collect storm-related brush.

What counts as brush?

Brush includes tree branches, limbs, and similar woody debris resulting from the recent storms.

- To help crews collect brush as efficiently as possible
- Place branches at the curb with the cut ends (“trunks”) facing the street.
- Keep brush out of the roadway.
- Do not block sidewalks, driveways, or fire hydrants.

Crews will work throughout the city and will make every effort to complete the citywide collection between September 8th and September 12th.

If your brush is not placed at the curb during this collection period, or if you miss the citywide sweep, please contact the Westland Department of Public Service to arrange for pickup after September 12th.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation as our crews continue helping the community recover from the recent storms.
