New law affecting youth football programs in California! Starting 1/1/21 an EMT must be present at all games. Coaches must annually recertify in CPR/AED and first aid and a "nonrostered" individual (e.g. a monitor) certified in CPR/AED and first aid must attend every practice. EMT's and practice monitors have the authority to remove an injured player suspected of sustaining a concussion or other head injury.

The American Medical Society for Sports Medicine just issued its position statement on concussion in sports. It concludes;

"Most studies examining the relationship of contact sports to mental health problems or depression later in life have low methodological quality, high risk of bias or both. Former high school football players show no difference in cognitive function testing and have lower depression scores when compared to non-contact sport controls. Mental health issues are common, multifactorial and often present independent of participation in contact or collision sport....former high school football playes do not show a higher prevalence of neurodegenerative disease when compared with non-football peers."

"The incidence and prevalence of CTE in the general population, in former athletes, or in former athletes with a history of concussion or repetitive head impact exposure, are unknown. A cause and effect relationship between postmortem CTE changes and ante-mortem behavioural and cognitive manifestations have not been demonstrated, and asymptomatic players have had confirmed CTE pathology at autopsy."

Earlier this morning, a volunteer of the Fillmore Search and Rescue Team was tragically killed on the I-5 freeway while attempting to render aid at the scene of the traffic accident.

At the time of the incident, The Fillmore team was enroute to Mt. Pino area for a training exercise. Several other team members were also injured.
