***Update 6/1/26***
The Freedom 250 Mobile History Truck event Scheduled for June 14 through 16, 2026, has been canceled.
Following the announcement of the Freedom 250 Mobile Museum event on social media last week, it was brought to our attention that while the program receives partial funding and support from federal agencies, including the U.S. Department of Education, it is also supported by PragerU, a media organization associated with a particular political viewpoint.
When the Westfield Police Department arranged for this event and partnered with Westfield State University to provide the location for the museum, our sole objective was to provide a free, educational, and family-friendly opportunity for community engagement. We believed the mobile museum would offer a unique way for residents to learn about American history while allowing officers to connect with the community we serve. At no time was our participation intended to endorse or promote any political ideology, organization, or viewpoint.
However, over the past week it has become clear that some members of both the University and Westfield community perceive our involvement differently. While that perception does not reflect our intent, we recognize that maintaining the trust and confidence of the community is essential. Because even the appearance of political alignment could negatively impact that trust, we have made the decision to cancel the event.
We apologize for any inconvenience or disappointment this decision may cause.

*Update 5/28/26*
The Westfield Police Department became aware of the Freedom 250 organization in April 2026. At that time, our understanding was that this was an initiative of the Federal Government associated with the national commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary and included a series of mobile museum exhibits. In an effort to promote community engagement and provide a unique opportunity for residents, members of the department coordinated with the organizers to arrange for one of the mobile museum exhibits to visit Westfield.
Since making those arrangements, we have become aware that while the Freedom 250 initiative receives partial federal funding and has support and endorsement from several federal agencies, including the U.S. Department of Education, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the U.S. Department of Transportation, and the U.S. Department of the Interior, portions of the curriculum and exhibit content for the Freedom 250 Trucks were developed in partnership with PragerU, a nonprofit media organization with a conservative viewpoint.
The Westfield Police Department’s decision to facilitate this mobile museum was made solely to provide a community-focused experience and was not intended as a political statement or endorsement of any political ideology, organization, or viewpoint. Any perspectives presented within the exhibit, or interpretations visitors may draw from the content, do not represent the views or positions of the Westfield Police Department or its members.
For those who choose to attend, we hope the experience is enjoyable and informative. The department remains committed to partnering with a wide range of organizations to create opportunities that strengthen relationships between the Westfield community and its police department.
